The window treatments I designed for my client began with a desire to combine a contemporary flair with a traditional home. The client wanted to bring in an acrylic edge and a bit of shine into the room. She requested mirrored trim and acrylic rods. The perfect challenge in an industry that does not offer mirrored trim or all acrylic rods. So, I designed it all myself!
My first step was to design the rods, brackets and rings in all acrylic. They needed to be tailored yet fabulous. I designed the brackets to be the art piece of the set. I collaborated with a local acrylic manufacturer to design the shape. They were able to take my drawing and replicate it out of acrylic. I specified everything from style, shape, thickness and size. They fabricated these one of a kind components that make quite a statement.
Next was to design the mirror trim. The acrylic manufacturer cut and polished over 300, 1" square acrylic mirrors for trim. I used acrylic mirrors because they are much lighter in weight then glass mirrors. After testing several forms of adhesive, I hand applied each mirror with clear silicone adhesive, one at a time, 1/2" apart and 1/2" from the leading edge. After each mirror was applied and set for 24 hours, I hand polish each mirror to eliminate all finger prints. The mirrored leading edge of the panels were gorgeous!
Installation was a challenge to ensure the acrylic was not scratched, scuffed or cracked. After each piece was installed, we had to polish the pieces to be sure they were spot free.
I used golden chenille for the French pleated panels, but the effect of the mirrors and acrylic rods was simply breathtaking.
The client was so pleased with her new, truly custom, one of a kind, window treatments.
Previously I had designed custom window treatments for the same client's dining room. I had coordinating beveled mirrors fabricated to add to the center of her dining room cornices. Now the two rooms flow flawlessly!
What ideas do you have for your home that I can translate into perfectly designed custom window treatments?
