I love when flowers are incorporated into design in a room. There is nothing more beautiful then a large floral arrangement on a dining room table accompanied by custom window treatments of course!
I have always had an interest in flowers. I even took a flower arranging class in college. You know, senior year and a few hours to spare!
I have a friend, Lourdes Albrecht, who has quite a talent for floral design. Lourdes is an independent floral consultant. Her company, Heaven-Scent Flowers, designs arrangements for weddings and special events all over the Chicagoland area. Her residential arrangements are absolutely beautiful! Lourdes has been kind enough to offer us some tips about flowers and holiday decorating in this issue.
I'd like to welcome Lourdes's friends and family to this issue of The Elegance in Windows E-Zign. I publish this E-Zign twice a month, filled with decorating tips. You may click here to view past issues.
Don't forget the beautiful draperies for your dining room that will go along with those floral centerpieces. I can be reached at Windowdzn@aol.com to design the perfect treatments.

The fall season is well on its way. This time of year brings about some of the most beautiful and vibrant arrays of color -- from golds, to browns, to reds and beyond. Knowing that all of the winter holidays are just around the corner, I can't help but want to soak it all in.
I am really so fortunate in my line of work, to help my many clients take advantage of what the holiday season has to offer - by bringing it right into their home with floral designs and arrangements. Many times, this can begin with their front door entranceway. With just a few branches of red twig dogwood and curly willow, coupled with an assortment of some custom greens to include pine, cedar, lemon leaves, eucalyptus, and boxwood. Guests will be greeted with the most beautiful and refreshing scents of the season.
Table centerpieces are also a sure way to capture the spirit of the entire holiday season. I start by using a beautifully made wicker cornucopia basket (i.e.- a horn of plenty--signifying prosperity), which has been a staple for many historic thanksgiving table settings. Filled with fruits, vegetables, and flowers, and carefully arranged to look as though they really are flowing out of the basket. They are an easy way to brighten any table! (Tip: Most every basket that we design, includes water tubes and/or wet foam inside the basket for much longer lasting arrangements). Undoubtedly, there is really no greater way to bring the best of nature indoors, than with fresh flowers and arrangements. But even given my competitive rates, in today's economic climate, silk arrangements can be a much wiser investments. And although the initial cost of a silk arrangement may seem high, the return will arrive in the form of the ability to use these pieces annually for many seasons to come. Another option is a "combination arrangement". Over time, I have found that a mixture of fresh cut flowers combined with dried and silk flowers can add even greater dimension, depth, and value at a much lower cost. In whatever form, a floral design or arrangement can definitely add that finishing touch to get everyone feeling the holiday spirit.
