Ways With Buffets
Before the big day, set out the serving pieces you want to use. Consult your menu to determine what pieces you will likely use.
Gather some large flat platforms, like boot boxes or upside-down plastic containers to create various "lifts and levels" for placing food dishes. Don't worry about the look of them, just their stability, as you will be hiding them with fabric.
Place fabric or a table cloth over the platforms. Inexpensive dupioni silk or faux silk is elegant but almost anything would do. Raw edges are no problem because you can fold and finesse the fabric. Use your hands to sculpt the fabric and to ensure that all your platforms are covered.
Next, set the dishes on them. Make sure to cover the boxes and let the fabric puddle and drape where it can. Tuck under the raw edges or hems so they don't show.
Next, add holiday décor items like silk flowers or leaves, bead garland, small collectibles and accessories, or gourds to the empty spots to add visual interest and a designer touch. Choose items appropriate to the season or party theme such as ornaments at Christmas or confetti, masks and noisemakers at News Years.
Make the table lovely. Chargers (large plates that go under the dinner plate) are a great way to make the place-setting look fabulous. Use a detailed dinner plate and keep what surrounds it simple. Or use a basic set of dishes and add a beautiful napkin or favor to the plate.
Options for great centerpieces are hurricane jars filled with items to match the buffet, fresh flower arrangements, or candles. If you plan to leave the centerpiece on the table, keep it low so people can talk over it. If you wish, use more of the matching fabric from the buffet and create a nest of fabric or a "runner" by tucking it under your centerpiece.
Remember: a lovely presentation makes your guests feel truly special. And this simple but glamorous way of presenting your next holiday or party meal will have your guests talking as much about your design skills as your culinary ones!
