Don't Let it Go on Another Day! Create your "Style File"
The best decorating advice is the simplest: Don't live another day with a room you don't like! If you have a problem room, start today to make a change.
But how do you start?
* Resolve to make some decorating magic happen! Stop putting it off. You have invested in your house. Now start to invest in making it a home.
* Make a list of what you don't like about your rooms. Writing it down can help clarify for you.
* Start with one room. Decide that this will be the month you start your decorating project.
* Start your own "Style File." To do this, gather some decorating magazines and spend some time clipping photos to guide your changes. Clip photos that catch your eye. Group your clippings into a folder or binder by room.
* Next, analyze each photo: ask yourself. "What is it I like about this room?. Do I love the wall color, the draperies, the style of furniture, the dark floors? Make comments based on your photo analysis such as "I like a relaxing bedroom." As you go on, try to be more specific..."I like simple bed spreads wtih colorful pillows." Write your comments on sticky notes and stick them to your photos.
* Still trying to pin-down your personal style? Go back through your comments and look for themes such as "I find blue soothing." Also, look to see what photos you are most drawn to, as they can be great inspirations. You might find that all of the photos you clipped have ocean blue walls. Blue walls might be a great place to start your decorating project!
Once you know what you like, you will make better decisions. Having an idea of what you like best will help you to begin the process with confidence and will help your decorator understand your desires even more!
