California Employment of Minors Requirements
As school ends and summer begins, students are out and about looking for jobs. California requires all minors employed under the age of 18 to obtain a Permit to Work even when school is not in session. This includes minors who have dropped out of school and minor children employed by a parent or guardian unless the child works in agricultural, horticulture or domestic labor on or in connection with property the parent or guardian owns, operates or controls.
The work permit is obtained by the minor from the student's school. The minor and employer complete the application "Statement of Intent to Employ Minor and Request for Work Permit". Once signed by the parent or guardian, the minor returns the application to the school. School officials determine whether or not a work permit will be issued. The work permit may be revoked by the school at any time based on individual circumstances.
