Q: You just had the successful launch of the Pléiades satellite, can you tell us a little about the program and the capabilities of the new satellite?
A: Pléiades 1, which launched in December 2011, is the first of a two-satellite constellation. It will be followed later this year by its twin, Pléiades 2. Together, they will operate in a phased orbit, allowing for daily revisit to any place on the globe. With Pléiades, we will provide orthorectified, 50-centimeter resolution products as a standard. Our clients will have multiple products to choose from (black & white, color, ortho or raw data) all for the same price.

A Step Closer to Mapping the Earth in 3D
First TanDEM-X Coverage of the World Completed |
After a year in service, the German Earth observation satellite TanDEM-X, together with its twin satellite, TerraSAR-X, have completely mapped the entire land surface of Earth for the first time. The data is being used to create the world's first single-source, high-precision, 3D digital elevation model of Earth. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) controls both radar satellites, generates the elevation model and is responsible for the scientific use of TanDEM-X data.

Reference3D Chosen as Part of GMTED2010 Update |
Created over 15 years ago, GTOPO30 is the oldest freely available Global Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Recently, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) along with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) collaborated to update this dataset. Astrium GEO-Information Services was approached and agreed to provide extracts of our Reference3D product to fill in elevation gaps. The updated dataset, known as the Global Multi-resolution Terrain Elevation Data 2010 (GMTED2010) will replace GTOPO30 and will provide an updated foundation dataset for users working on continental or global scale applications.

Pléiades 1 on Schedule for Commercialization
Pléiades 1 was successfully launched on December 16, 2011, reaching its final orbit on January 3, 2012. All systems and flight equipment have been activated and are functioning well. CNES engineers have been impressed with the level of maturity the satellite has shown so far.
The mission center, located at CNES in Toulouse, France, is up and running controlling the satellite and tasking plans. Ground stations located in Torrejón, Creil, and Kiruna are all active and working well. Data inventorying, archiving, posting to the catalog, and production have been completed successfully.
A formal review will take place on March 1, 2012, after which Pléiades 1 is expected to begin commercial operations.
