Planet Action at the ESRI International User Conference
ESRI UC Logo
The ESRI International User Conference in San Diego was a great opportunity to meet up with the Planet Action community, and to make new contacts. Many of these new contacts have already led to new Planet Action projects! Like last year, ESRI offered us a warm welcome and plenty of space to display our posters and films. Projects benefiting from imagery and ESRI technologies presented their results at the two Planet Action sessions held on Thursday, July 16.
Planet Action Day
The first ever Planet Action Day, held on June 9, 2009 was a huge success. More than 120 partners, climate change experts, friends, and project leaders met in Toulouse for a day of conferences, exchanges, and networking.

Thanks to all who were able to come, and we look forward to organizing our next exciting Planet Action event soon.

  Focus on the Field
Forest Land Use and Climate Change in North Sulawesi
Swamp Indonesia contains the world's third largest area of tropical forests (after Brazil and Congo) and is one of the world's largest greenhouse gas emitters. It has become the epicenter for Reducing Emissions due to Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD) trial programs because of its existing, large tracts of forest undergoing rapid deforestation.

A full description of the project is available here, and results here.
Centre de Conservation des Chimpanzés (CCC)
MonkeyThe chimpanzees of Guinea are threatened not only by illegal trading for the pet market, but also agricultural deforestation and habitat destruction This is why the CCC is protecting them, as well as leading extensive awareness campaigns, through:

- Continuously improving their living conditions (facilities, veterinary rooms, etc)
- Re-socializing the chimpanzees in order to prepare them for their release
-  Leading a conservation and awareness program in partnership with Project Primate, USAID and Jane Goodall Institute (JGI)
- Becoming a regional chimpanzee sanctuary to prevent the extinction of the subspecies Verus in Guinea

A full description of the project is available here, and results here.

Clean Technology May Trump Tough Emissions Controls, Joint U.S.-China Study Says
By Annie Jia of ClimateWire
The New York Times
A report by researchers at the Center of Clean Air Policy (CCAP) states that is more realistic to focus on cutting greenhouse gas emissions than setting emissions targets on developing countries, such as China. The technology-based approached would be using pre-selected technologies that are considered relatively energy-efficient.
