Rapid Access Imagery

The U.S. defense/intelligence community has a seemingly insatiable appetite for commercial satellite imagery. The unclassified nature of images from private-sector remote sensing operators makes these products appealing to the military because they can be quickly transmitted between commands and freely shared among allied forces without the time-consuming clearances required for distribution of classified images.

While purchases by the Pentagon have been a boon to commercial satellite operators, these firms face the added challenge of staying ahead of the evolving needs of military end-users.

IceWEB & Spot Image Partner

Pleiades Mission Countdown - Episode 2
Pleiades testPleiades 1 has completed a series of tests  to simulate operating conditions in space. The deployment of one of the satellite's three solar panels was filmed. In space, this operation will be performed just after reaching orbit.

The three solar panels are mounted directly on the bus structure. This architecture gives the spacecraft extra stiffness, damps vibrations and helps to improve image quality. The panels will also supply the electricity to power the satellite.

USGS Provides Free SPOT Imagery

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in partnership with Spot Image Corporation, has begun to distribute, over the Internet, SPOT satellite data collected over parts of North America between 1986 and 1998.

"We are pleased to now offer historic SPOT satellite data acquired between 1986 and 1998 to all users in the U.S.," said Bruce Quirk, head of the USGS Land Remote Sensing Program. "This collection is a valuable addition to the rich earth observation resources already available from the USGS."

The USGS is distributing this data at no charge through the USGS Earth Explorer search and order tool. Access is open to any registered user within the U.S., provided he or she agrees to use the SPOT data for non-commercial purposes.

"As the only commercial imagery provider with an archive dating as far back as 1986, we are excited to provide 12 years worth of SPOT archive data to the USGS so that the data will be more widely available," said Greg Buckman, Director of Sales and Marketing, Spot Image Corporation. "This data is especially valuable for projects involving time series data and change detection. We look forward to USGS earth imagery users taking advantage of this new resource."
