Greetings!
|
Students are settled in, classes have begun, the North Central Family is packing fields and stadiums cheering on our teams and the Office of Alumni Relations is gearing up for yet another exciting fall... and we all know what that means - Homecoming is right around the corner! You should have recently received your Homecoming brochure detailing all the events of the weekend. Had a blast at last year's Sesquicentennial Homecoming? Didn't make it to the big party on 11/11/11? Either way, be sure to make it to the Homecoming Reunion Celebration this year - no matter what your class year, this Celebration is for all North Central alumni!
There's a lot to look forward to this fall, like one of our spectacular student productions and our Fine and Performing Arts series with acts like Eric Hutchinson, Dionne Warwick and The Oak Ridge Boys. Be sure to check out the Alumni Calendar for all the fun events we have planned and arrange to make the trip back home. It's a great time to be a part of the Cardinal Family!
With Cardinal Pride,

Homecoming: October 25-28, 2012
|
As many of you already know, this is President Wilde's last Homecoming on campus as President of North Central College. Throughout his nearly 22 years, Hal and his wife Benna have enjoyed greeting alumni at hundreds of memorable events, including reunions, concerts, parades, chapel services and, of course, Cardinal football games.
Be sure to join us for Homecoming Convocation, Class of 1962's induction into the 50-Year Club, Athletic Hall of Fame, and Outstanding Alumni Awards. To all those classes ending in 2's and 7's - don't forget to register for your milestone reunions!
New this year will be the Homecoming Reunion Celebration in Res/Rec complete with a family-style dinner, dancing and entertainment - not to mention your chance to visit with Hal during his final Homecoming. Not a class ending in a 2 or 7? No worries! You don't need to wait until your reunion to join all the festivities. Plan your own own cluster reunion and serve as a table host and invite classmates and friends from surrounding class years - the choice is yours!
Join us as we celebrate North Central's next 150 years. We can't wait to see you!

Alumni Spotlight: Gail Tate '86
|

Gail Tate '86 has compiled an impressive resume over her years of work, including increasingly responsible positions at AT&T Bell Laboratories, later known as Lucent Technologies. "I've enjoyed every job I've had and loved working with and coaching people at all levels," Tate says.
Tate began working at AT&T because she was looking for tuition assistance to obtain her bachelor's degree. She first attended Lawrence University and then moved to Naperville after marrying Lawrence Tate '89. She decided a mathematics major would suit her talents and completed her North Central degree over 12 years. "I never thought about how long it would take - you can't focus on that," she says. "But on graduation day I walked. And I remember President Gael Swing telling me how much he liked my name."
Throughout her time on campus as a nontraditional student, Tate was grateful for support from her advisor and professor for many of her math courses, Dr. Richard Wilders, Marie and Bernice Gantzert Professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of math. "I would meet with him or call after work and on weekends," she recalls.
After retiring from Lucent, Tate found a new outlet for her talents. She was hired by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to manage the Technology Research, Education and Commercialization Center that is part of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
"I was lucky to have mentors and coaches, and then you pay it forward by coaching someone else," she says. "And my advice to everyone in the working world is to say true to yourself."
