Bits and Pieces | |
The author of "Amazing Grace," John Newton, had great difficulty with his memory. In the later days of his life a friend asked if he still had a bad memory. Newton replied, "Yes, I do, but I remember two things: I am a great sinner and I have a great Savior; and I don't suppose an old slave trader needs to remember much more than that."

Consider the Ant
 By Tim Whistine
"Go to the ant ... consider her ways, and be wise" (Proverbs 6:6 KJV)
Adam Clarke's Commentary observes, "The ant is a remarkable creature for foresight, industry, and economy." The ant is tirelessly dedicated to its work. Self-motivated, as Solomon states, it has no "guide, overseer, or ruler" to sound reveille, give orders, etc. Solomon directs the slothful person - the idle, lazy, unmotivated type individual - to "go to the ant" and observe their work ethic. The Living Bible paraphrase says, "Take a lesson from the ants ... Learn from their ways." This verse reminds me of an experience I had in which an ant to taught me a valuable lesson. One day while watching some ants in their busyness, I noticed one little guy carrying a rather large blade of grass. The size of his burden caught my eye. As the little guy with the over-sized load made his way to wherever it was he (or she?) was going, he came to a crack in the sidewalk. In my mind I could see this poor little guy standing at what we would consider the Grand Canyon, with no way to cross it. He paused momentarily, then turned and traveled to this way then that, unable to find a crossing place. The chasm was just too wide. What was he to do? What he didn't do was sit down and start sobbing into his handkerchief, screaming, "Why me? It always happens to me!" He didn't start a campaign for better roads and bridges. He didn't go on a hunger strike until someone did something to alleviate the problems besetting the working class ant. He did what his Creator designed him to do - he found a solution to his problem! And where do you suppose the little ant found the raw materials to forge ahead through his difficulty? I was amazed at what I was about to see. After the ant took possibly 2 or 3 seconds to survey the situation, he laid the blade of grass across the crack in the concrete, walked across the blade of grass, then resumed lugging his burden to wherever it was he (or she?) was going. His burden became the bridge to his future work!
As I sat there, I was breathless - amazed - shamed! I wanted to take off my shoes for I truly felt as if I were on holy ground. I wanted to prostrate myself on the ground. I wanted to cry. I wanted to pray. I needed to repent. We humans tend to whine and complain when there are "cracks" in our sidewalks too great to cross. We bellyache whenever we feel we are carrying an "over-sized" load (burden). We tend to focus on the gravity of our situation. Not the ant! He possessed enough vision and daring to transform his burden into a bridge and forge ahead with his life's work. What for us would be defeat, for the innovative ant, became a destiny. Is there a crack in your sidewalk? Is your burden over-sized? Why not lay your burden across the altar and let God transform it into a bridge to your future work? Go to the ant. Learn a lesson. If God can do that for an ant, what can He do for you?
Editor Note: Bro. Whistine is a licensed minister in the UPCI.He has served as a full-time evangelist, assistant to the pastor, and pastor.

Missionary Schedule for Arizona
January 11-16, 2011 Amy Sawyer, Central America/Caribbean, Belize An honors graduate of Jackson College of Ministries, Amy Sawyer has spent the past 17 years actively involved in missions. In 1990 she went to El Salvador as an associate in missions to work under the direction of Bruce Howell and later transferred to Honduras to work with her father and mother, Jerry and Brenda Sawyer. In 1997 she transferred to Belize where her primary work is directing the Bible school which she founded. Amy Sawyer received her appointment as a United Pentecostal Church missionary in September 2002. She was ordained by General Director of Foreign Missions Bruce Howell in a special chapel service at World Evangelism Center in February 2004. She is heavily involved in children's and youth ministries. She is also the acting superintendent of the Spanish District of the UPC of Belize. January 18-23, 2011 Robert and Gayle Frizzell, Asia Appointed to Southeast Asia in September 1990, Robert and Gayle Frizzell pioneered the UPC in Vietnam, Laos, the Golden Triangle, and Cambodia and converted, established, and trained the ministry in these nations. He started an International, a Burmese, and two Thai churches in Bangkok, Thailand. He assists the national church in Thailand and Myanmar with ministerial and leadership training. He teaches in the Burmese Bible school and conducts ministerial participation. Because of this, I travel much. When I begin something new in a place, I convert, disciple, and train local ministry to assume the local, the new provincial, or national church. When I go into an established national work, I reaffirm the doctrine in detail, encourage and strengthen the ministry, motivate them to greater evangelism, and teach what is requested." February 1-6, 2011Robert and Lisbeth Dame, Bolivia After high school, Robert Dame spent a year as an AIMer in Argentina. While studying at Indiana Bible College, he spent five summers in Guatemala, teaching, preaching, and constructing the Bible school building and churches. During the last summer in Guatemala, he and his future wife worked in campus ministry. Following their 1998 marriage, they started a Spanish daughter work in Houma, Louisiana, and pastored for five years. They were appointed to Bolivia in 2002. In Bolivia, the Dames directs the Bible school in Cochabamba and oversees extension studies. He is a presbyter and coordinates evangelism and leadership seminars and soul-winning boot camps. They are very active in campus ministries; he's the regional campus ministries coordinator. Lisbeth Dame has a passion for children's ministries and serves as national Sunday school director. Her ministries extend to teachers' seminars, evangelism, outreach to a children's home, and women's prisons.
March 15-20, 2011 Shawn and Tammy Turner, Europe/Middle East, Turkey The Turners are graduates of Jackson College of Ministries. They have assisted at both First United Pentecostal Church, Richland, Mississippi, and Pentecostal Tabernacle, Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In August 2005 their dream of becoming missionaries came to pass when they accepted an AIM assignment in Turkey where they served faithfully for five years. In September 2009, Shawn and Tammy became fully appointed intermediate missionaries to Turkey. They are now in the process of learning the Turkish and Arabic languages. Once they have completed deputation, they will be move to the city of Antioch, Turkey, where we were first called Christians. info is available online at www.foreignmissions.com March 29-April 3, 2011 Randy and Theresa Richardson, Africa, Mauritius / Seychelles / Reunion In February 1994, the Randall Richardsons assumed the oversight of the island nations of Mauritius, Seychelles, and Réunion. Originally appointed to Madagascar in 1980 after a two-year AIM assignment, they served for 16 years in Madagascar, during which time the church grew from 2,000 members to more than 25,000. The Randall Richardsons pioneered the work in Seychelles with the help of a Malagasy brother, while giving leadership to the church in Mauritius and working to establish the church in La Réunion. God has blessed with over 4,000 constituents, 18 churches and preaching points, and 14 licensed ministers in the three nations. In 2000 the Richardsons were unable to secure a resident visa for Mauritius. Therefore, following a short furlough, they studied French in Bordeaux, France, for nine months before establishing residency in La Réunion, from where they lead the work in the three nations. April 12-17, 2011 Rusty Reddick May 10-15, 2011 Stanley Scism, South Asia / United Kingdom Born in South India, Stanley Scism moved to North India when his parents, Harry and Audrene Scism, studied language, pioneered churches, and led church organizations in India and NE India. After three years in the Philippines while his father was regional director, he graduated from high school and went to America, determined to become an attorney. God instead called him into overseas work. After five AIM assignments in South Asia, Madagascar, and Great Britain/Ireland, he received career appointment, after which he founded Scism Christian Institute-New Delhi, Scism Christian Institute-Pokhara, Yesu Mandali (the church in Nepal), and Yesu Kalishia (a fellowship of churches in North India associated with Scism Christian Institute). He also founded Glory magazine, Light and Life Audio, Beta Bible CDs, Gamma Video, Delta Distribution, Epsilon Individual Studies, Wonderful Words publishing, and has co-authored or authored several books. He continues to edit, write, teach, administrate and evangelize. June 21-26, 2011 David and Kathy Brott, Missionary Envoy Missionaries David & Kathy Brott have spent a number of years in missionary work in the Pacific Region, basing out of the Philippines. They have ministered in over 15 countries, including Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Palau, Saipan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines. Missionary Envoy is a new endeavor for Foreign Missions Division, and David and Kathy are the first to fill the position. Their job will entail traveling throughout UPCI churches in North America, raising support for special projects and missionaries on deputation. They served as pastors here at home for 21 years and have been fully appointed missionaries for a total of about 19 years. Their family consists of four children, (and spouses) and six grandchildren. Please contact them anytime for further information: E-mail LDIBROTT@aol.com or 402-651-1889
July 19-24, 2011 Steve and Cheri Smith, Guyana Steve and Cheri Smith were pastoring in Illinois when they felt God's call to serve in Guyana, South America. They served first as AIMers for a year and a half before receiving their appointment as full-time missionaries in 2002. Presently they have been working in Guyana for the past six years between AIM service, deputation, and are now into their second year of this term. Smith serves as the superintendent of the work and as the Bible school president. He and his wife both teach in the Bible school. She serves as the national Sunday School director, and they pastor two churches, including the headquarters church in the capital city of Georgetown. Their three children Alexia, Steven, and Cameron, are all involved in the work and enjoy serving the Lord in Guyana. He states, "We're so blessed to be missionaries in beautiful Guyana, the 'Land of Many Waters'." July 26-31, 2011 Radovan and Tanya Hajduk, Croatia / Slovenia Radovan and Tanya Hajduk served on AIM in Novi Sad, Serbia for two years before moving to Canada. Radovan was part of the platform and youth ministry and Tanya helped in Sunday School at UPC of Oshawa. Radovan was born in Serbia and had an abused childhood. His testimony and ministry have reached hundreds of people who have experienced abuse. Tanya is missionary Samuel Balca¿s daughter and was born and raised on the foreign field. The Hajduk¿s served on AIM again in 2006. They spent nine months in the Baltic Republics and over a year in Croatia, where they presently are working with various home groups in order to pioneer a church. Upon returning to the field, they will settle in the capital city, Zagreb, and work on establishing a church there, find new contacts and travelling also in Slovenia, pioneering works.
August 9-14, 2011 Ed and Naomi Hosmer, Japan While on active duty with the U.S. Air Force in Japan, Ed Hosmer and his wife Naomi were under Paul Dennis's ministry. Due to an overwhelming burden to reach the Japanese people with the gospel and a specific calling on their lives to evangelize Japan, Hosmer sacrificed a promising law enforcement career and separated from the military. They pursued their calling by serving as AIMers for eight years and currently pastor one of the fastest growing UPC churches in Japan. They received their appointment as UPCI missionaries to Japan in 2002. They have created a bilingual discipleship program which is very effective in training saints and national leaders and ministers. Having lived in Japan for over 15 years (Ed) and being a Japanese national with a command of the language (Naomi), the Hosmers are valuable assets to the kingdom of God in reaching the Japanese people with Bible salvation.
