Remembered by Name
By Thetus Tenney

As I have gotten older I have acquired the habit of reading the obituaries in my local morning newspaper.  Mostly, I check to see if it was someone I might know.  Also, since I am in my seventh decade I always check to see the age of the deceased.  I wonder about the person, their family, what their life was like.

Then the same thought always comes to me-here is their name in print for this one day but how long will they really be remembered and by how many?  In a very few days the rhythm of life will return to all but a few.

Are there individuals, or someone in particular, whose name you would like to be remembered?  Remembered in a living memorial.  Remembered into the next generation.  Remembered in an exceptional way which could extend even to eternity.

This can be done with an ongoing scholarship that will assist a young person to study the Scriptures with an apostolic advantage and be able to extend the ministry of the one you wish to be honored and remembered.  This can be done by providing an annual scholarship in the name of your choice.

An annual contribution of $5,000, $3,000, $2,000, or $1,000 can be named for that special parent, pastor, leader, friend, or mentor.  Year by year it will be presented to a deserving student accompanied with a brief biography of the one whose work and ministry you want to be remembered.  This adds meaning to the monetary assistance and assures that the revered memory of a ministry past is not forgotten.

In June 2008, UGST received pre-accredited status with the Association of Theological Schools, a first for educational institutions of the UPCI.  Our official status is "candidate status," which makes available to UGST most of the privileges and responsibilities of full accreditation.  Our final report, the self study, will be sent to ATS in the spring of 2010 prior to a peer evaluation team visit in March or April.

Our faculty members all have their PhDs or are in the process of completing their dissertations.  They bring not only their academic background but also their ministerial experience to the classroom, ensuring that students are grounded in the truth and enabling students to further develop their own ministry.

Urshan Graduate School of Theology is the only Oneness Apostolic graduate school.  Degrees are offered on campus, online, and through short-term classes, making it   possible for individuals to pursue their degrees without moving from their homes or leaving their places of ministry.

Of the 41 graduates of UGST to date, we have alumni who are foreign missionaries, home missionaries, hospital chaplains, military chaplains, counselors, pastors, and leaders actively involved in their local congregations.  You can honor your loved ones, friends, and others you want to remember by starting a scholarship to benefit those who have a calling and want to prepare themselves for ministry.

To honor an individual, you can prepare a brief biography of the person, which will be given to the recipient of the scholarship.  The recipient will send you updates of their journey throughout their time at UGST to let you become acquainted with the student receiving your gift.  You will receive a certificate recognizing your special gift, your name will be added to a beautiful plaque tribute in the hallway of UGST, you will be recognized in our publication, the Insight, and the individual, family or district you honor will receive a letter from us letting them know of the honor you have given them.

For more information on how to become a part of this great program, contact Rhonda Morley at rmorley@ugst.org or Evelyn Drury at edrury@ugst.org.  You can also call the school at 314-921-9290.

Let's keep the memory of our loved ones, mentors, pastors and leaders alive in the following generations.  Students from Urshan Graduate School of Theology will remember the one who helped them as they further prepared themselves for ministry.  Remembered by name!

Marge
Mom's (Margie Staten) Eulogy
By Aimee Staten

The door opens and she enters - immediately the atmosphere in the room changes. It's beautiful, exciting, and full of life. It's Margie walking in with her big smile, loud voice and kind words of greeting. She begins by asking everyone how they are then proceeds to tell them how beautiful they are or how they should wear that outfit everyday!!!

If Margie Staten were in this building today, there would be a great number of people waiting to speak to her. After we dismissed the service, people would swarm around her, jockeying for position, but whomever she was speaking to at that moment would be, for her, the only person in the room.

Such was the love of this woman for people - friends, family and even new acquaintances. I say new acquaintances because it was never long after she met someone that they were friends from that moment forward. You know what I'm talking about if you think back to the first moment you met her and were startled and then charmed by her loud laugh or answered a barrage of questions about yourself, your family, habits, talents and illnesses. Mom had a way of extracting alarming amounts of information from people without them being fully aware of all they were revealing. Then months later, she would recall the details of that conversation and demand an update on all of your information. She did it because she loved people.

Many of you spent time in her beautiful home and most importantly, at her table. There, you could forget about dieting because if the tempting spread of food didn't get you, her habit of refilling your plate multiple times would. She would make eating what she served you a salvational issue. If you tried to claim you were too full to eat another bite, she would ask, "Do you want to go to heaven?" Well... So we always said "yes" to that question and, of course, to more of her delicious food.

And then there was the food and the beautifully appointed table. For most hostesses, one main course with several side dishes and a dessert was sufficient. Not for mom, the ultimate southern hostess. You couldn't have one dessert. That was a sin! You had to have three or more. One meat choice? Oh no, you had to have two or more!!! If she knew you had food preferences or allergies, she would make dishes to appeal to you as well as the other dishes she had planned. If you ever left Margie's home hungry, the fault was your own. Her table, even crammed to overflowing with food, was always beautifully set. Think of gold-rimmed goblets and strawberry china, lively conversation and a feeling of warmth around your heart and in your stomach, and you might begin to understand her.

Margie's family - her mom, dad and siblings - always looked forward to the times she, Dave and the boys were able to join them for the holidays. Margie loaded up the van with all of her baked goods and down the road they went. She took over the entertainment after dinner. After instructing her nieces that they had to sing, she would follow it up by giving them an offering. She brought her favorite games and always had a new one to teach. Even with all the fun and games, she found a way to insert a devotional at every gathering. They shared plenty of laughs, had lots of fun and created many lasting memories. According to her sisters, there is none other like her.

Mom lived her life to help others. She was a pastor's wife for 26 years, but she ministered to people for much longer than that. As a registered nurse in her early career and then as a caretaker of children until her death, mom always had a listening ear and a whole lot of advice. She never, even to last few weeks of her life, let her own ill health stand in the way of helping someone else. She would give of herself - her time, her money, her love - until it hurt. If there was work to do, she would outlast even those with sound bodies, and then she would invite everyone over for a dinner that she prepared and hosted afterwards. She was - in her home and in her church - a beautiful example of a living sacrifice. She showed her love of the Lord and the work to which she and her husband were called by unflaggingly serving others.

She especially loved her boys and her husband. She was proud of her boys, David and Mark and all that they had become. She was most proud that they had dedicated their lives to God and His service. In fact, she lived her life for them - working for them, promoting their interests, cooking and caring for them, singing with them and rejoicing at each milestone. She was happiest when surrounded by her family, and, especially in the last years of her life, when she held hands with her husband and prayed or talked about the word of God.

This wonderful, vivacious woman, whom we know as Sis Staten, Mary, Margie, mom and (for you, dad) honey, has gone to be with the Lord. And we can only guess that heaven must have needed a greeter. Can you imagine entering that beautiful city and there is Marge with her big, beautiful smile, rosy cheeks, with arms outstretched waiting to give you a big bear hug and a welcome home. No doubt she will take part in the menu planning for the marriage supper of the lamb. She is lifting her powerful, exuberant voice in praise to the one she dedicated her entire life to.

We miss you already, mom, but we know that you can now dance, unimpeded by pain or worry, down those streets of gold as you worship the one to whom you devoted so much of your life.

For the rest of us - who are the better for your having been with us even for a short time - we will strive to remember the lessons of giving and love that you strove to teach us.

Mabel Combs-A Legacy of LoveMabel Combs

A true servant of God, Sis. Mabel Combs worked for the Lord until the very day her physical limitations prevented her from doing so. Even from the confines of her bed, se made sure that the work of the Lord was going forward, "Who is covering Prison Service?" she'd ask, or "Is everything set up for the women's meeting?" Sis. Combs' tireless effort for the Kingdom of God never wavered.

It was 1969 when Walton and Mabel Combs came to Casa Grande with little more than a calling from God and two young boys. In the early days, their church consisted of their family and a few Sunday School children. In order to help provide for her family and church, she made and sold peanut brittle. She always said that God had given her a strong arm and blessed her efforts. A very diligent saleswoman, doors were opened to Sis. Combs that others were not able to get through. The Combs' family has recently estimated that over a time span of 30 years, Sis. Combs personally made and sold approximately 750,000 bags of peanut brittle.

In addition to generating income for her family and church, she was continuously witnessing and picked up anyone and everyone who needed a ride to church. There was no distance too great for Sis. Combs; she know that hungry souls needed to be in church. She even drove about 25 miles one way to bring the Montiel family to church, not knowing that she had her future daughters-in-law sitting in the backseat!

The amount of time Sis. Combs spent working was quite substantial, but the amount of time she spent in prayer was equally so. She knew that the only way to raise a family, grow a church, and reach a city was on her knees. She interceded on behalf of saints and sinners alike. To Sis. Combs, there was no need that was too small or too great to bring to God. She could often be overheard saying, "You've never failed me yet, God." A mighty prayer warrior, countless lives were changed because Sis. Combs was willing to pray.

There are very few ministries at Apostolic Tabernacle that Sis. Combs did not take some part in. She was involved in Nursing Home, Prison, and Park Services, Special Needs Prayer, Ladies' Meetings, and even Outreach, just to name a few. Sis. Combs lent her hand and anointing to any work that needed her. Her involvement inspired saints to participate and brought sinners to repentance.

The number of lives that have beea impacted by God's light shinjaf through Sis. Combs is unfathomable. A chance meeting in a grocery store or a casual encounter during outreach often left people with a church card in their hand and an impression in their heart that they had been in the presence of a Godly woman.

In the city of Casa Grande, Sis. Combs' name is known no matter what part of town you are in. many people remember attending Sunday School or have a story to tell of a special way she impacted their life. Through Sis. Combs, God was able to show countless individuals His love. She saw each person's soul and loved hem, no matter their outward appearance.
Sis. Mabel Combs has left behind a beautiful legacy of a servant hi love with her Savior. A legacy to be remembered, cherished and emulated.

We love you, Sis. Combs!
