Vita Verse 81 By Tim Whistine
"Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe" (Philippians 3:1 KJV).
Concerning Philippians 3:1, The Living Bible says "it is good for you to hear it [the same message] again and again." Matthew Henry's Commentary says it is "good for us often to hear the same truths, to revive the remembrance and strengthen the impression of things of importance." This is exactly why the book of Deuteronomy exists. According to Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, "The title of the book comes from the Greek word Deuteronomion, which means 'second law.'" Moses wasn't giving Israel a new revelation, but was simply repeating the original law a second time. Some things bear repeating.
Recently, I overheard a church member commenting that their pastor was teaching on basic doctrine again-as if this were a negative. This individual didn't realize what a positive this good pastor was bringing to their assembly. In a day when many are searching for new innovative methods to grow a church, a church's doctrinal foundation is allowed to erode through neglect-and this, my dear reader, is dangerous!
In a book titled, Psychological Processes and Advertising Effects (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers 1985), a compilation of papers presented to the second annual Conference on Advertising and Consumer Psychology held in Chicago, Illinois, in 1983, the editors discuss various models of the information acquisition process, and how it relates to advertising. Advertising is the lifeblood of practically any business. That's why companies spend billions of dollars on it each and every year. Advertising generates sales which is important to the financial solvency of a business, etc. Therefore, business and science work together searching for clues and cues that will help advertising dollars pay off and strengthen businesses as well as the economy. That is why conferences like the one previously mentioned are important.
When it comes to information acquisition, certain rules apply. For instance, the message an advertisement provides must get the consumer's attention. It must not only be relevant, it must be interesting. The message must also be comprehensible and easily retained. Only then will the information be assimilated and applied to purchasing decisions. This is what makes the repetition of an advertisement so important. The reason you hear the same commercials, slogans and jingles over the air waves every day has to do with the importance of repetition and its role in helping the public absorb the advertiser's message so that it begins to affect their thinking. The editors of the book I mentioned earlier, state "the likelihood is small that any message would be successful after a single exposure" (italics are mine). Therefore, to imbed their message into your thinking so it will affect your beliefs about their products or services, businesses repeat their advertisements again and again, week after week. Repetition of a message therefore, affects the formation of one's beliefs, which in turn affects decision-making and behavior.
Perhaps now you can better understand why pastors return to major biblical themes frequently. It is important that such doctrines be absorbed into your thinking so it will align your belief system with God's Word and result in a life well lived. And this, Paul said, is "safe." So the next time your pastor re-teaches a biblical theme he or she has taught dozens of times before, thank them and cheer them on. After all, doctrine is important!

A Passion for Young People
By David Strader
On occasion, I have been blessed with the opportunity to sit and talk to various business leaders, Pastors and other Youth Leaders to ask them, "What does it take to become successful in a field of study, career or ministry?"
The majority of the responses involved two important values, "time" and "passion".
Most of us understand that to be successful it takes an investment of "time" dedicated to learning our field of study or ministry. The more time invested, the more we learn, the more we practice our craft and so the more experienced we become.
But more imperative than time or even experience, all of the respondents agreed, without a "passion" for what you want to accomplish you will eventually become discouraged and fail. It was once said by Arthur Buddhold "Follow your passion, and success will follow you." It must be passion that drives you to complete what you desire no matter the circumstances or obstacles that may arise.
What is passion?
Passion can be expressed as a feeling of unusual excitement, enthusiasm or compelling emotion towards a subject, idea, person, or object. A person is said to have a passion for something when they have a strong positive affinity for it. A love for something and a passion for something are very similar feelings. Without passion one cannot realize the end goal or desire they have set. It must be passion that drives you to complete that desired result.
Why is passion important?
In the context of this discussion, having a passion for the desired end result, you will be driven to complete the extraordinary when normally you would give up. Passion will compel you to continue praying for that young person that appears to not care. Having a passion for others salvation will pull you out on the streets to spread the word of God when no one else is there.
Passion will require you to overcome the unthinkable, the radical!
In this day we are living in, youth leaders must have a sincere passion and desire to see young people saved. Our church leaders have tried to instill in us, the youth of today will be the church of tomorrow, however I ask you "Who will reach out for those that will be "the future church?"
If we as Youth Leaders do not feel the passion to see others saved; if we do not encourage and empower others; if we do not guide them then who will? God is searching for people with passion that desire to see young people come unto him. God's passion and desire must be in us. He wants to empower you to see an outpouring of revival within your city.
I sincerely feel Arizona is directly in the funnel of the perfect will of God and is about to see an explosion of revival in our churches directly affecting our young people. God is challenging us and asking "Who is ready?" If there were ever a time to be ready for an explosion, now is the time.
NOW is the time to set aside petty distractions and give this outpouring our undivided attention, desire and passion. I also feel we have Pastors and Youth Leaders that are ready for this challenge and outpouring that God has prepared for us, but let me offer a word of encouragement to you, through adversity and disappointment. BE PASSIONATE!
When you fast and pray for young people and they give up, keep your passion for young people. When the young people are shouting one Sunday and defeated the next, keep your passion because they are depending on you and I to keep that connection, desire and passion. The outpour funnel is here, are you ready for the challenge?
Editor note: Rev. David Strader is a licensed minister in the UPCI. He is and his wife, Sherri, are Youth Directors of The Lighthhouse Church, Apache Junction, AZ. |
The Great Physician
By Debbie Akers
Recently I had a severe reaction to a medication prescribed by my doctor. It was intended to help me and to 'fix' a long-term problem I have. She had prescribed it with extensive medical knowledge and with the best of intentions. It is a perfectly good medicine that helps many people; however, my body could not tolerate it.
That episode got me thinking of how awesome our God is. He is the Great Physician! He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. -Isaiah 53:5
When He heals it is always done right. No negative side effects. No severe reactions. Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise. -Jeremiah 17:14
Yes, I still go to doctors and I still take my prescribed medicines but all-in-all my trust is in Jesus. The doctors 'practice' medicine but I serve the One that created me and He knows how to 'fix' me. And He gets it right the first time!
And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Matthew 9:35 |
