Vita Verse Tim Whistine
By Tim Whistine

"As far as I am concerned, God turned into good what you meant for evil . . . ."
-Genesis 50:20 TLB

In the world of the oyster, today's irritant becomes tomorrow's pearl. Humanly, we all look forward to the moment when the irritant becomes the pearl. Weeping may endure for a night, but we must remember-joy is coming (Psalms 30:5). Take Joseph for instance. He had big dreams. His brothers had big jealousy. Joseph was treated with blatant unkindness and was eventually sold down the road. So began Joseph's sojourn into misery and suffering. Twenty odd years later, when his father and brethren were destined for starvation, Joseph's position in Egypt was second to Pharaoh and he was able to provide relief for them. Yesterday's irritant had become today's pearl. Things change with time. Therefore, we should not obsess about today's irritants. It may only be the beginning of what will become a pearl.

Obsessing over the present can be defeating. We need a long-term view. Instead of focusing on the irritant-envision a pearl. Political analysts would have considered Abraham Lincoln a lost cause, but Lincoln did not obsess about his past losses and went on to win the White House. Country/Pop Music Superstar, B. J. Thomas, failed choir as a course in school but did not obsess about it and went on to establish himself as a singing legend, selling nearly thirty-five million records with seven gold ones to his credit. The Italian sculptor Agostino d'Antonio obsessed over the difficulties he experienced while working diligently on a large piece of marble. Unable to produce his desired masterpiece, he gave up.  Eventually, Michelangelo discovered the stone and created one of the world's masterpieces-David. He turned an irritant into a pearl.

Perhaps we could all use a little bit of what Christopher Columbus had a whole lot of during his famous voyage of 1492. Despite many difficult and miserable experiences, Columbus sailed on day after miserable day. With time, his irritants became pearls. So can ours! They key factor is to not obsess over today's irritants. Weeping may endure for the night, but joy is coming! Everything changes. Today's irritant may be tomorrow's pearl. The example of Joseph should teach us to never give up on our dream. Difficult experiences often precede some of the most rewarding events in life. It did for Joseph. It might for you as well.

Editor note:  Rev. Tim Whistine is a licensed minister in the UPCI. He has served as a full-time evangelist, assistant to the pastor, and pastor. Currently, he divides his time between pursuing two degrees, preaching/teaching, and writing.

Let God Be Magnified Bonnie Peacock
By Bonnie Peacock

Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified. -Psalm 70:4

"Madge! Is that you?" The West Texas draw was pronounced. The elderly woman sported bright orange hair and leaned on a leopard cane.

"Oh, sugar. I haven't talked to you in ages!"

Kiss, kiss.

As I sat in the waiting room, two long-lost friends renewed their acquaintance as they settled on either side of me. Cringing, I had picked this remote area for the express purpose of getting caught up on my reading. Now, I was to be regaled with the events of the last few months of their lives.

"Shirley, you just finished that project downtown, didn't you?"

"Oh, I did! It was just wonderful. We raised a truckload of money!" I wondered to myself how much money it took to fill a truck. I doubted I had ever seen that much.

"Didn't you work on that project with Weatherly? I've heard so much about her. What was she like?"

"Well, let me tell you ..." I shuttered to think of what I was about to hear. I held in my hands a book about improving my prayer life, and my ears were about to be assaulted by a character assassination. However, I was in for a pleasant surprise.

"She did not disappoint. She was everything I hoped she would be!"

As the conversation continued, I wondered how I could possibly meet this woman. I know a lot of wonderful people, but I always have room in my life for a person who does not disappoint.

Later that evening as I reflected over the intrusive conversation I had endured, I pondered the acclaim given the absent Weatherly. That is just like God! Only God is true and faithful. He is everything we want Him to be-need Him to be! I was confident that if Shirley and Madge spent enough time with Weatherly, she would eventually disappoint them.

The Scriptures are full of accolades to the greatness of God. Regardless of how highly He is acclaimed, He surpasses our wildest expectations.

How big we see God determines to what magnitude He is able to work in our lives. In fact, we are told to "ascribe ... strength unto God" (Psalm 68:34).

Many circumstances are beyond our control, but how we see God is our choice. We can daily adjust our thinking upward. God is vast, immense, great, powerful, wise, excellent, dependable, holy, compassionate, love, and so much more.

We can either focus on what is going wrong in our lives, our own deficiencies, and broken dreams, OR we can lift our eyes to Him. The closer-the more we look at Him, the larger He becomes. We choose to magnify the Lord in our hearts and minds.

We are never more in the center of God's will than when we bring glory and honor to His name. We were created to worship and adore our Savior. When we lift Him up, we too are lifted-above the mundane, dreary, pain-filled days of mediocrity-to set in heavenly places. As the songwriter said, "He lifts me up to be more than I can be."

"O Lord, how great are they works!" (Psalm 92:5).

"Blessed be the Lord God ... who only doeth wondrous
things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever:
and let the whole earth be filled with his glory;
A-men', and A-men'
(Psalm 72:18-19).

Note: Sister Peacock is a Christian lady of the highest standard of character. She has been gifted to use the pen to minister to the needs of people. She is also heavily involved in ministry in our local church here in Odessa Texas. -Rev. Terry Pugh
