abaftonABA awards New Brunswick Highland Games Festival one of North Amercia's top events this year!
Coming up this month in Fredericton (July 23-25) is the New Brunswick Highland Games Festival,  one of the largest events of its kind in Atlantic Canada and a favourite amongst competitors and visitors alike. The American Bus Association (ABA) designated  the 2010 New Brunswick Highland Games Festival  as one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2010 by an elite tourism industry selection committee last fall. This was a great honor for the Festival and gives Fredericton an important boost in visibility among professional tour planners. ABA's 2010 Top 100 Events Selection Committee selected New Brunswick Highland Games Festival,  from among hundreds of U.S. and Canadian events nominated by state and provincial tourism offices and convention and visitors bureaus.

The Festival takes place on the beautiful grounds of National Historic Site, Government House, a stunning architectural backdrop for the hundreds of pipers, drummers and highland dancers. The event is a pageant of music, colour and Scottish culture and has two equally important halves - the Highland Games (piping and drumming, highland dancing and traditional athletics) and the Scottish Festival (entertainment, clans and workshops).  Although provincial in scope, the event draws hundreds of competitors and performers from across Atlantic Canada, Ontario and the Eastern seaboard.

This year's event features a Friday night kick-off concert, showcasing many talented musicians and dancers from all over the Maritimes, a good old fashion Ceilidh where anyone who enjoys playing music is encouraged to bring instruments and join in the jam with traditional music, dancing, and good friends. New for this year, the Highland Games Festival will host their first NB Fiddle Competition. For more info:  www.highlandgames.ca
