Public "on board" with fight to save Ship Hector By Staff, Transcontinental Media
Source: The News, April 20, 2010
[PICTOU, NS] - A petition being circulated to Save the Hector Heritage Quay is getting a strong response from the public, says the chairman of the Ship Hector Foundation.
Faus Johnson said recently he estimates there are close to 1,000 names on the petition that began circulating after the foundation met with the town asking it to be opened this month.
"We have had many individuals and groups express an interest to assist us financially," Johnson said. "Lots of people who are signing the petition have come up with ways to raise funds, but we are reluctant to start any kind of major fund raising until we get some kind of commitment from the town."
The Town of Pictou said at the end of March it can't afford to continue paying the costs of running the ship. Mayor Joe Hawes said with the new sewer system going online, the town can no longer afford to put another $500,000 on the taxpayers to run the waterfront.
The town was looking for provincial or federal funding to help run the facility for at least the next few years and had been meeting with various government agencies for the past year and a half to achieve that, but no one seems to be stepping forward.
During a recent meeting, the foundation told the town it would be willing to foot the bill for a portion of the basic operating costs required to keep the Ship Hector afloat for at least this summer. It is estimated that $90,000 will be needed to run a bare bones operation at the Hector Heritage Quay this summer.
The foundation has appointed its own steering committee to look at the costs of operating the quay this summer, he said, to find out if $90,000 is the true number needed to keep the exhibit operating.
Johnson said the foundation is looking at a very tight schedule if it plans on opening the quay the long weekend of May.
"If we are going to initiate a fundraising campaign we are going to have to do this before May 24th," he said.
Johnson said the petition will be presented to all levels of government to show the support the quay has received on a local and national basis.
"If there is silver lining in the cloud, it is that once people found out they are going to lose something, they stepped up the plate and assisted with calls, emails and fund raising," he said. "We really appreciate their interest. We have received so many encouraging comments on the website and Facebook."
Johnson said anybody interested in donating to Save the Ship Hector Heritage Quay will have their money held in trust in the Ship Hector Campaign account pending the town's approval in principle to its proposal to save the quay. If the town gives its approval, a meeting will be held for all citizens interested in assisting with the fundraising effort.
In the meantime, he said, everyone is encouraged to show their support by signing the petitions on www.gopictou.ca/shiphector and on Facebook at Save the Ship Hector Quay.

New Summer theatre at the Playhouse - World Premiere of The Bricklin
[Fredericton, NB] The Bricklin - a new musical play depicting the story of the Bricklin - the failed automobile manufacturing venture, will take to the back stage of the Playhouse this summer. The show is being co-produced by Theatre New Brunswick and the Fredericton Playhouse and will run for multiple weeks, starting July 30.
Named after its American inventor Malcolm Bricklin, the Bricklin SV-1 (safety vehicle one) is a futuristic sports car built between 1974 and 1976 in New Brunswick and financed by New Brunswick's Hatfield government of the early-mid seventies. The brassy, full-length musical was written by Canadian playwrights Allan Cole and Paul Ledoux and recalls the flamboyant premier, the controversial entrepreneur, and their shared dream of an innovative new sports car being produced in New Brunswick. Expect kitchy dialogue and laugh-out-loud lyrics set to the bouncing disco music of the '70's!
Group rates (min. of 20) and complimentary tickets for drivers/guides. There is motorcoach parking (advance notice), restroom facilities; and a licensed bar. Block seating can be arranged.
