Suicide, a Family Tragedy
Last month, there were two stories in the news about suicides that are worth discussing from a metaphysical and medium's point of view. The first story involves the apparent unintentional suicide of Whitney Houston. Her death highlighted a tragedy many families face unexpectedly. This type of death is shocking and takes a toll on the people around the person passing away. The daughter of Ms. Houston, for example, had to be hospitalized for emotional distress shortly after learning about the loss of her mother. Traumas and losses are a couple of reasons why people turn to psychics and mediums for answers. They want to know the reasons for this tragedy and seek help from "beyond the physical" for closure. Suicide is a particularly difficult event for people to understand regardless of whether or not the act was intentional. Healing for those surviving the loss of a loved one is not easy.
The subject of suicide is not a pleasant topic to discuss; however, it is a part of the world we live in and needs consideration. There is never a "light" situation facing a medium when a client comes to see them because it is often about a loss. A loved one in spirit, if they choose, can communicate with us and give validation and insight into the last moments of their life. A medium must be open to sensing accurate information from the person in spirit and understand their plight. They must also be sensitive and caring when communicating that information to a vulnerable client.
A suicide usually affects several people in a family or group. It is not just the person committing the act. Some people communicate from spirit that they felt that suicide was the only means by which they could solve their problems. Unfortunately, they could not foresee any other resolution.Furthermore, the fact that this kind of loss can be emotionally devastating to those around them is usually not considered. The circumstance surrounding every suicide is unique, and there cannot be one answer to explain all of them. This article is not about passing judgment; it is about bringing awareness to a problem in our society.
The second story in the news was about a murder suicide concerning a father and his two sons. This situation involved the suspicious disappearance of the man's wife and mother of the children. It appears the authorities were about to make an arrest when the man decided to take the life of his children and his own life. He did this by injuring his children and setting his house on fire with gasoline. A social worker was witness to this horrific incident and immediately reported the fire to the authorities. The man and his two children could not be saved, and the story made national headlines.
In time, the headlines will go away and the victims are soon forgotten by the media. However, the scars left by this tragedy will be forever in the hearts and minds of those around the people who perished. The social worker is reportedly devastated and the grandparents of the children have their loss and the loss of their daughter to grieve over. The family of the father in this story bears incredible grief as well. Even all of us who heard about this tragedy grieve to some degree. The devastation cannot be expressed by mere words alone.
This last story is another one about a suicide that affected their families and our national consciousness. The trauma of a soul leaving a body by this means has a disturbing affect upon others. Many families that have suffered this type of loss have difficulty recovering from it. The shock alone may take a long time to overcome, and the grief cycle that must be fulfilled to heal can take years or may never be completed. If you have suffered this type of loss and need healing, it is important to seek help or at least know that others care and are concerned about you.
There are many resources for families grieving as a result of a suicide. A person's faith community and professional counseling are two sources for help. Groups focusing on the particular pain suicide causes are another. Psychic counseling can be a positive supplement to these other means of coping; however, it should not be the only form of therapy. Severe grief should not be neglected and must be acknowledged before any recovery is possible. The suicide prevention organization in your area may have other ideas to help you if you are suffering from this type of loss.
Finally, it is important we be compassionate towards those who made the decision to take their own life. This does not mean we cannot be angry with them for depriving us of their company. Being sensitive to the needs of the victim is important, but we cannot forget the others affected. Springtime is the time of the year when suicide is the most common and is one of the reasons it is being brought to the forefront. It is important to be supportive of the people we love at all times, but during the spring, we need to pay a little more attention to those appearing to be in distress.
Suicide is an issue that may not appear to be metaphysical until there is a need to use psychic gifts to acknowledge a person in spirit and the pain they felt. This subject is very real and disturbing, and if there is any comfort about this tragedy, it is that the soul of a loved one who takes their own life survives in another dimension. Metaphysics does not condone the act of suicide. It is only a vehicle used by some to find a little relief from this kind of loss. Communicating with a crossed-over loved one and knowing they continue to exist can be part of a healing process. It allows a survivor from this tragedy an opportunity for growth.
