Cybersecurity is increasingly in the news, and government and private sector systems are continually being attacked.  This program will examine the state of cybercrime today, where it is headed, and what should be done to counter it.  Topics that will be discussed by the expert panelists include:

  • What are the trends in cybercrime and cyber attacks?  What form are they taking? Who is doing them?  What/who is vulnerable?  What are the biggest risks that companies are facing today?
  • Are the bad guys winning?  What can we do to get ahead?  What is the private sector role and what should govt be doing? What are the things that can be done that will really make a difference? 
  • This is cybersecurity awareness month.....is the government doing enough?  Is the government pushing in the right direction?
  • Where does cyberwar fit into the picture?  Is this a purely government responsibility?

Jody Westby: Under Ms. Westby's leadership, Global Cyber Risk LLC has developed an international reputation as a boutique firm that provides first-tier advisory, forensic, and technical services to corporations, non-profit organizations, and governments, focusing on privacy, security, cybercrime, and breach management.  Prior to founding Global Cyber Risk, Ms. Westby served as senior managing director for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) where she was responsible for information security, privacy, information sharing, and critical infrastructure protection issues across the federal government.  Ms. Westby serves as Adjunct Distinguished Fellow at Carnegie Mellon CyLab.She was lead author on Carnegie Mellon's Governing for Enterprise Security Implementation Guide, which was developed for boards and senior management, and its 2008 and 2010 Governance of Enterprise Security Survey reports.Ms. Westby's work for Carnegie Mellon on the governance responsibilities of boards and senior executives for the security of their organizations' systems and data was showcased by the CISO Executive Network through a series of special workshops held in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington, DC, and Baltimore.  Before joining PwC, Ms. Westby founded the Work-IT Group LLC and specialized in serving government and private sector clients on legal and regulatory issues associated with information technology and online business.  Working with The World Bank and USAID, she conducted numerous information and communication technology (ICT) readiness assessments of developing countries.She has advised government officials and industry in Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Armenia, Serbia, Russia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Trinidad, Dominica, St. Lucia, Grenada, South Africa, Mexico, and India on the development of their legal frameworks for e-commerce, security, and privacy.

Previously, Ms. Westby:

  • Launched In-Q-Tel, an IT solutions/venture capital company founded by the CIA
  • Served as Senior Fellow & Director of IT Studies for the Progress & Freedom Foundation
  • Was Director of Domestic Policy for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce
  • Practiced law with the New York firms of Shearman & Sterling and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.
