Cohen, formerly a senior fellow at the Economic Strategy Institute; Prof. George Weinstock, Associate Director of the Genome Institute, Washington University, St. Louis; and Dr. Eli Dart of the ESnet Network Engineering Group, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The Genomics Data Deluge and Innovations in Infrastructure -- Discussion of Planning for a Workshop Bridging Several Tech Communities
This call will discuss C-PET's plans for a workshop that will bring together the genomics/bioengineering, high performance Internet, lightwave communications, and data storage communities. In studying the human genome, scientists have created genome analyzers that are producing 10 times more data every two years - faster than the pace of Moore's Law! This tsunami of data has challenged genomics researchers to find new ways to transport huge mountains of data to numerous institutes and to store petabytes of data at various locations.
To help address these challenges, C-PET is assembling technologists who have already dealt with Big Data, such as the high energy physics community. We have also brought innovative technologists such as Open Flow for data storage and GLIF Open Lightwave environments, as well as the National Lambda Rail and Internet2 research networks into a broad conversation with genomics experts.
We plan to hold a workshop early next year to foster interaction between these technology communities. We hope this will result in a sharing of experiences and possibly more concrete plans to use infrastructure innovations to help improve how the genomics data deluge is managed.
