Dear Friends,

I wanted to update you on C-PET's plans for 2010, and invite you to help us as we work to focus the vast policy implications of developments in emerging technologies. C-PET brings together a wide range of participants from across the political spectrum and diverse sectors (including finance, business, and civil society) - convinced that emerging technology issues have much greater significance for the future than most policymakers and cultural leaders realize.

As we move ahead, we do need the help of your tax-deductible contributions! Small gifts are welcome as well as large, and the simplest way to give is to use the PayPal button at c-pet.org. If you prefer to send a check, please use the office address below. Thank you!

The website has information about our various conferences including reports and other documents. A conference report is in preparation for our latest event - an invitational symposium on the future of the internet, which brought together key corporate leaders with policymakers. On another front, you may be interested to read my commentary in Nature Biotechnology on "synthetic biology." In it I address the rationale for C-PET. (Click here to view article.)

As we look ahead, 2010 will see the launch of three C-PET Commissions - on biotechnology, artificial intelligence/robotics, and the future of the internet. Their first, urgent, task will be to assess the key strategic issues we face as we look 10 years ahead in each of these technology/policy areas.  Meanwhile, we continue our international participation with the launch of C-PET Global; and we serve as the U.S. partner in Project RISE, which explores the implications of biometrics technologies (RISE is funded by the European Commission).

We appreciate your continuing interest in C-PET, and look forward to working with you in the year ahead.

Best,

Nigel Cameron
