State Street Traditional Jazz Band of Portland, Maine
State Street Traditional Jazz Band (photo courtesy of Meredith Perdue of &unlimited)
Authentic New Orleans jazz played by a band that traces its origins to the pioneer musicians who created the music.
Bandleader, Mark Finks, was born and raised in Portland, but played and recorded with the great New Orleans musicians in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The State Street Band was organized by Finks in 1988 to present programs of authentic New Orleans jazz to audiences here in New England. The band is fortunate to count the very best traditional jazz musicians among its members, playing blues, spirituals, ragtime and parade numbers as they were performed in the early days of the music.
Entrance fee for this performance is $15 for guests (includes museum admission) and $8 for OMAA members. Reservations accepted starting at 10 am on the day of the performance, 207-646-4909.
Program sponsor: York Art Association.

Assemblage: Art of the Found Object
Assemblage first came be recognized as a legitimate art form with the cubist pasting and gluing collage experiments of George Braque and Pablo Picasso in France in 1912. These artists broke up space and shapes by using torn, cut and pasted papers as integral components of their designs. Picasso's Still Life with Chair Caning, from May 1912, is considered the first modern work of art using collage and assemblage in a three-dimensional construction. Since that time, collage and assemblage art have grown into media accepted by artists and the public.
This exhibition features contemporary and historic artists such as Joseph Cornell, Louise Nevelson, Varujan Boghosian, David Madasci, Laura McCarty, Harvee Riggs and Bernard Langlais.
