6th Annual Almost Labor Day Auction
Art Vending Machine Lights Up Festivities
Art vending machines are the latest development in pop-culture-meets-nostalgia in the gallery of your choice. And while the concept debuted in 1997, it's the hot new way to bring affordable, tiny masterpieces home. Now a trademarked enterprise with 90 branded locations throughout the country and many more - like ours - creative spin-offs. There's even an art vending machine at the Smithsonian.
The Ogunquit Museum of American Art presents the Teeny Tiny Art Vendor for the evening of the Almost Labor Day Auction, on loan - thank you -- from Three Graces Gallery in Portsmouth.
The image shows the machine with a recent sample of offerings at Three Graces. The OMAA Teeny Tiny Art Vendor will showcase the work of seven different artists including photographer Nancy Bean Horton, illustrator Bill Paarlberg and some surprise guests.
The art vending machine recycles a classic cigarette machine from the 1950s, replacing the packs with small packs of original art at prices ranging from $50 to $150. Buy tokens at the desk, drop them in the slot, pull the knob and presto! An original work of art and a purchase that supports the not-so-teeny work of the Ogunquit Museum of America Art.
The Almost Labor Day Auction is a highlight of the cultural and social season as well as the significant fund-raiser supporting the OMAA's continued operation. Last year's Auction brought in over $51,000 which enabled the Museum to open its 2010 season a month earlier than in past years and to support several specific conservation and exhibition costs.
Tickets are now on sale: $50 per person or $135 to be listed as an Auction Patron (includes an invitation to an Auction preview reception with some of the artists whose work is featured in the Live Auction.) For information about tickets and other event details, contact the OMAA, 207-646-4909
