John Bisbee: Two Tons through August 1, 2010
Maine artist John Bisbee constructs large abstract sculptures out of seemingly unlikely material: 12-inch steel spikes. This installation of his heavy metal objects marks Bisbee's first exhibition at the OMAA. Thousands of spikes, welded together in massive, intricate patterns, move the eye around and through his sculptures, using the weight of the spikes juxtaposed against the open air component of the created negative space. His work, though physically heavy, engenders the feeling of lightness with his creative use of light and space.
July 20 "Two Tons" Gallery Talk with John Bisbee, 7 pm
The artist John Bisbee, who teaches at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine will talk about his work on exhibit in OMAA's Sculpture Gallery. Chad McDermid writes, "John's sculptures stem from a single event which occurred in 1988. Overturning a five gallon bucket of rusted nails he discovered that years of oxidation had fused the nails tofgther and they emerged as a single mass. This cylindrical chunk, molded by the bucket, became the impetus for all of Bisbee's works to follow." Program sponsor: Carole Aaron. |
