Golf Tournament and REMMIES/Leadership Dinner Coming Soon
Call for Members to Serve on Committees,
As Chapter Officers, and as Board Members |
| | |
We had a great meeting at Jack London Kitchen & Bath Gallery in July. Many of us have saved a few hundred dollars over the last week by implementing a few of Rosie Aiello's time management practices.
 | |
Mark Calender |
Our Chapter is working hard preparing for both the Golf Tournament in October and the REMMIES/Leadership Dinner in November. Both these events are successful based upon the participation of our members. Please be sure to submit your applications!
We are also looking for future leaders of the Chapter for representation on either a Committee, as a Board member, or as an Executive Officer. Our Chapter is fortunate in that we have a wealthy cross section of industry professionals that each bring a unique skill set and/or experience. We look forward to you rising to the challenge when you receive our call!

Water resources are always a hot topic of discussion. Whether it be restoring Hetch Hetchy and identifying another local water source for a good portion of the Bay Area, or even the Delta and Southern California trying to divert its water, this precious commodity will always be controversial. Our homes represent at a micro level the significance of what can be done to protect this resource.
At our August 8 Chapter Meeting, our featured speaker, Bill Wilson from Bill Wilson Environmental Planning LLC, will cover this topic specific to harvesting rain water and gray water systems.
We look forward to seeing you there!

| July 2012 Chapter Meeting Recap | | |
"Your Time Is Your Money"
Our sincere thanks to Kevin Kirby, Valerie Simon, and the entire staff of Jack London Kitchen & Bath Gallery for their hospitality in hosting our July Chapter
meeting. It was a wonderful place for our members and guests to network; it features a wide range of high-style contemporary kitchen and bath furnishings and fixtures.
The electic menu for the evening, from the shrimp and asparagus, right down to the fried chicken was wonderful, and it was enjoyed by all in attendance. Compliments to the chef!
We had the opportunity after the meal to honor our 25 year member, McCutcheon Construction. Michael and Jan McCutcheon were on hand with us to celebrate this milestone. Michael took a few minutes to speak to everyone in attendance about his years with NARI and how valuable his NARI association was and continues to be. We celebrated this milestone with cake for all!
Our deep gratitude and appreciation to Rosie Aiello, MBA from Clear Choice Consulting for her enlightening presentation on "Your Time, Your Money." Rosie offered many great tips and techniques for effective time management.
Highlights of Rosie's presentation included discovering the biggest time wasters and how much wasting time costs; simple tips to stop wasting time, and seeing how even five minutes a day of improved productivity translates into a bigger bottom line. Thanks Rosie, for helping us to get organized!
We look forward to seeing everyone at the August Chapter meeting on

| Marketing Moments Presenters at the July 2012 Chapter Meeting | | |
Members Register Early for Chance at Marketing Their Businesses
We had two companies at our July Chapter Meeting make "Marketing Moments" presentations! Early registering member companies have a opportunity to market themselves in a couple of minutes or less with this program.
Marketing Moments are done spontaneously throughout the networking/dinner hour of the meeting by a SFBA NARI Board or Committee Member, whereby they ring a bell during different times during the hour, giving each winner their marketing moments. This is a quick and fun way to get your company name out there!
July's "Marketing Moments" were supplied by the following companies:
California Shower Door Corporation
Tony Contreras
Maco Construction, LLC
Mac McReddie

By Treve Johnson
Treve Johnson Photography
SFBA NARI Board Member
We now have a Facebook page for the Chapter!
Look for SFBA NARI on Facebook and "freind" us. I you haven't created a Facebook page for your business, you may wish to do that too. I'm hearing from an increasing number of contractors and architects that they are using Facebook, Houzz, and Twitter for generating business. You may be wondering how this works.
On Facebook, the point is to get your friends to help you generate more visibility for your business and to drive traffic to your website. If you are working on a kitchen remodel, by posting a little notice about the project, you will get the attention of the home owner, and all of their friends also. You may want to include something unique about the project. Encourage all of your clients, sub-contractors to become your friend. This will help grow your network and increase traffic.
In a similar fashion, you can use Houzz to gain attention for your business and to drive traffic to your website. An architect I recently spoke with said that with strategic use of social marketing he has landed half-a-dozen projects that are a direct result of his presence on Houzz. He also says it has led to a three-fold increase in traffic to his website and led to features in a number of articles. |

2013 Contractor of the Year (CotY) Program Opens | | |
CotY Program for Projects Finished Between July 1, 2011-November 30, 2012
NARI members across the nation are invited to compete for the prestigious 2013 CotY Awards in recognition of their achievements for remodeling projects finished between July 1, 2011 and November 30, 2012. Each year, NARI has both first-time entrants and seasoned participants that go home with Regional and National Awards.
No matter what your CotY experience level, follow these easy steps to be sure your entry is given full consideration by the judges and your work receives the recognition it deserves.
Why You Should Enter
Companies - from one-person shops to the largest remodeling firms - report that winning this award is a major factor in enhancing their image within the industry and with prospective customers, and is a major morale booster for their employees. The numerous marketing opportunities available to CotY winners help set your business apart from other remodeling companies, and NARI helps by providing tools and resources to make the most of this distinguished honor.
~Renovation Style- Every year at CotY judging, editors from Meredith's Better Homes & Gardens special interest home publications attend. They attend in order to look at each and every project binder entered into the CotYs. In addition to featuring a CotY entry in every issue of Renovation Style magazine, these editors also oversee other home/shelter publications and often a project catches their eye for feature in another of their publications. They consider both winners and non-winners. Don't miss this rare opportunity to get your work showcased in front of these influential editors.
~NARI Green Project Recognition- The NARI Green Project Recognition Program is available to all CotY contractor entrants. Participants meeting specified criteria based on the CotY category entered will be recognized for sustainable and eco-friendly remodeling practices regardless of CotY winning status. See Green Recognition for full details.
~NARI Universal Design Project Recognition- The NARI Universal Design Project Recognition Program is available to all CotY contractor entrants. Participants meeting specified criteria based on the CotY category entered will be recognized for meeting universal design standards regardless of CotY winning status. With the launch of this program, the existing Residential Universal Design category was retired, thereby allowing entrants the opportunity to enter into the appropriate category as well and obtain recognition for universal design work. See Universal Design Recognition for full details.
~Alliance Partner Project Recognition- New for 2013- NARI is teaming up with its Alliance Partners on projects selected as Regional Winners. This program year will include recognition by CEDIA for winning projects that
included a CEDIA member on the project team. Check off the appropriate box on the entry from.
~NARI Promotions - NARI sends press releases announcing both regional and national winners to more than 10,000 publications nationwide, many that request imagery from the award-winning projects. All winners receive
press release templates ready for customization and distribution in their local markets.

Key Things To Look For In Y our "Construction Attorney"
By Bryant Byrnes, Esq.
Law Offices of Bryant Byrnes |
In last month's article, I mentioned I had attended a program by an attorney who introduced himself to a group of contractors and architects as a "construction attorney." He then said there are perhaps 1,500 attorneys in the Bay Area who claim this title - but 1,400 really are not such critters.
This was a bold statement. But while I would argue there are more than a hundred in the area, I tend to agree with the premise that there is a small and finite number of practitioners in this realm. (And I also flatter myself as being one of the true "construction attorneys.") But this comment does raise something of a metaphysical question - what is a "construction attorney?"
Although construction law is indeed a specialty, it covers a wide range of legal subsets of knowledge and experience. These include contract law, licensing issues, liens, collections, and homeowner disputes. Attorneys who claim a specialty in this field must be both knowledgeable and experienced. They should be proactive - they must keep their clients informed of relevant changes in law that directly affect these clients.
Often the best such fit for small to mid size construction firms or architect practices is someone who can act as your "general counsel." He or she should be able to personally handle a medley of transactional problems such as:
· Contracts;
· Contractors State License Board issues/problems;
· Straightforward employment issues; and
· Leases/business entity.
For those issues outside these common matters, the attorney should be able to make good referrals. This means referrals to other attorneys he or she knows to have the requisite expertise. This is why experience is so important; one acquires a "brain trust" of specialty counsel only by dint of years of practice.
Transactional Counsel versus Litigators. When a construction problem arises, one might think to turn to a construction litigation attorney to solve the problem. With all due respect to these smart and brash fellows, litigators are not always the best "go-to" guys for general construction problems. Out of the gate, surgeons like to cut. Litigators want to litigate.
With some exceptions, litigation may not be the best and most economical answer to disputes. It is time consuming and can be very expensive. Transactional guys don't want to go to court if they can otherwise resolve the problem. [Disclosure - I am a transactional lawyer.] It is always best to find out what your alternatives are.
What To Look For
Experience- How many years has he/she been practicing in general? How many years handling construction law? How many construction cases has he/she handled? What kind of cases has he/she handled?
Number of Construction Clients - How many construction clients does he or she have? You can get a good feel as to his/her practice from the attorney's clientele.
Knowledge - Is he or she knowledgeable? This is not a silly question. Counsel must be conversant with California Business and Code requirements, statutory codes, current case law, industry trends, etc.
Personality/Compatibility - While perhaps hard to define, everybody knows whether they are compatible with a person - or not - very early in the relationship. And compatibility is key. It is a given that clients that are liked and respected get better service.
Conclusion. It is to your great advantage to work with a lawyer who already knows the field - and with whom you can work with. Sometimes specialists charge a bit more, but it is usually money well spent. So - are there construction attorneys out there? Of course; absolutely. But do your diligence to get a good fit.
