Blocking Lessons
4-H Folk Shawl

Deb M. loves to learn new knitting techniques and to share what she learns with her 4-H knitting group. She recently completed the Faroe Island "Stora Dimun" shawl from Interweave's Folk Shawls book, using a DK-weight wool and silk blend, similar to Silky Wool.

She decided to block just one half of the finished piece, in order to  illustrate to the 4-H knitters what a difference blocking makes to the look of knitted fabric.

Did the 4-H kids notice a difference between the two halves? Absolutely--what a great way to teach the importance of finishing details.

Word has it Deb taught the teacher something new during the Wonderful Wallaby class in February, too...Thanks, Deb!

Global fiber forces
What does drought in Australia have to do with the price of yarn in Delafield, Wisconsin?

Quite a bit, as it turns out--along with a few things you might remember from Econ 101, like supply and demand at the commodities level.

According to an article in the most recent issue of Yarn Market News, a trade publication for yarn shop owners, the price of wool reached a 10-year high in 2011, due to unfavorable climate conditions for sheep "down-under" and elsewhere in the world. Similarly, cotton prices more than tripled between 2008 and 2011, also attributed to poor crops and dry weather. Add to that the fact that China has been gobbling up the world's natural fiber supply like crazy, to feed its garment industry, and it's not hard to see why calculating the cost of a knitting project can sometimes cause sticker-shock.

We're doing our best to hold prices down where we can. Thanks so much for shopping with us!
