Greetings!
What do you get when you cross a military-curriculum-writer with a knitter?
KNITTING BOOT CAMP Even knitters with over 40 years' experience rave about what they gained by following this swatch-based learning program. Throughout the course, you'll create a sample notebook for yourself more valuable than any knitting book you can buy. Knitting Boot Camp starts at knitch on October 4th, and runs the first Tuesday of every month from 11:30-1:30, through May 2012. Only 2 openings remain--sign up now to reserve your place! 262-646-9392. NOTE: We apologize for inadvertently publishing the wrong dates in previous marketing materials. Dates above are correct. View the entire October and November class schedule REWARDS customers: Since initiating our Customer Rewards program over a year ago, we have been sending out courtesy email reminders about pending expiration dates for earned Rewards.
Due to the time-consuming nature of sending ever growing number of reminders we have decided to discontinue this practice. Please mark your Rewards expiration on your calendar so you remember to use it.
And remember, every time you redeem your $15 Reward, you have a chance to enter our end-of-year drawing. Last year, we gave away a $100 gift certificate, retired store samples, free classes, and other good stuff. |
Toy Knitting with Mary Jo--a FREE Workshop
| | Fishing Trip Spawns a Menagerie
Mary Jo Martinek was cleaning out her closets when she found a few forgotten knitted toys she had once made for young relatives, but never given. She remembered reading about our toy drive and decided to donate them.
Not long afterwards, she and her husband set out on a fishing trip. Up north with yarn and needles but no patterns, she was still thinking about knitted toys and started playing around with some design ideas of her own. (Does this remind anyone else of Elizabeth Zimmermann--fishing trip included?)
She wanted to create something simple that would also have stong kid-appeal. By folding and sewing a knitted strip she refers to as nothing more than a "scarf", Mary Jo devised a basic animal body with a tummy pocket. "Kids love to hide little things," she says. Arms, legs, and tails are picked up and knitted on after the body is folded and sewn. The animals you can create following this basic pattern are limited only by your imagination.
 | | Kitty Kat Pocket Pals and friends |
Mary Jo has generously offered to lead a free workshop at knitch on Saturday, October 22 from 10-12. Participants should come ready to have a good time and learn how the animals are assembled by helping sew up some examples to be donated to Children's Hospital. (If you have any buttons, rickrack, or ribbon you would like to donate for toy-making, please bring that also.)
Mary Jo will bring some unfinished and partially-finished animals she has knitted for use in the workshop. She will also talk about how the toys make great samplers for future projects of your own--as a way to try out stitch or color patterns. She has gone far beyond the original plain-pocket kitty to invent owls with Fair Isle and lace pockets, raccoons, a wolf, a pig, and even an iguana. (Peek in the window to your left as you enter the shop to see the iguana)
Her basic pattern for the Kitty Kat Pocket Pal is available at knitch to anyone who promises to knit one and donate it.
