130 student leaders to debate young graduates employability 

LIMASSOL - Employability of students and the impact of the worldwide austerity measures on higher education will be high on the agenda of the 24th European Students' Convention from the European Students' Union (ESU). The meeting of 130 student leaders from all over Europe, with Paul Krugman from The International Herald Tribune as a special guest, will take place from 18 to 20 October in Limassol, Cyprus and is hosted by ESU's Cypriot member, POFEN. "Privatisation of education needs an immediate response" 

BUENOS AIRES - "Privatisation of higher education needs an immediate response." This is one of the main outcomes from the '8th Higher Education and Research Conference' of Education International, a representative organisation of teachers unions from across the globe. The event took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 25 to 27 September. Go to full article

"Need for global cooperation of students bigger than ever"

LONDON - Student leaders from 35 countries from all over the world have agreed on a joint statement for international cooperation on education, sustainability, peace and social justice, at the first Global Student Leadership Summit. The Summit was hosted by the European Students' Union (ESU) and NUS-UK in London between 18 and 21 September 2012. Go to full article

ESU raises huge concerns on tuition fees in Europe

BRUSSELS - Growing disparities in tuition fees in Europe has caused reason for the European Students' Union (ESU) to ring the alarm bells. Karina Ufert, ESU Chair said: "We are witnessing a vast drop in student applications for universities in Europe as tuition fees are on the rise in many countries. Europe must act and put a halt to creating more barriers to education." Go to full article

Imprisoned student from Iran wins Student Peace Prize 2013

BRUSSELS - The European Students' Union (ESU) congratulates Majid Tavakoli, an imprisoned courageous student from Iran, for winning the Student Peace Prize 2013. ESU's Chairperson, Karina Ufert, said: "Tavakoli very much deserves to win this prize. He stood up for democracy and human rights in a country where criticizing the government is very dangerous." "Mass education fundamental to democratic culture"

PARIS - "Mass higher education is fundamental to developing democratic culture as well as optimising the talent of a new generation," said Karina Ufert, Chair of the European Students' Union (ESU) at the biennial General Conference of the OECD's Programme for Institutional Management in Higher Education on 17-19 September in Paris. ESU to co-chair Social Dimension working group BFUG 

NICOSIA - The European Students' Union (ESU) will co-chair the Social Dimension and Lifelong learning working group of the BFUG. This was decided at the Bologna Follow-up Group (BFUG) meeting which took place from from 28 to 29 August in Nicosia, Cyprus. Go to full article

European student leadership celebrates 30 years milestone

BRUSSELS - New generations of student politicians have gathered on a regular basis to create policies within ESU for three decades now. Upon founding the organisation in October 1982, it was decided that the first meeting would be preceded by a seminar on a topic of interest to all unions. Go to full article
