Commission replies to ESU on restriction of freedom for state-funded students in Hungary

BRUSSELS - "Requiring a person to work for a certain number of years in Hungary after completing education could potentially be an obstacle to free movement of workers", writes the European Commission in reply to an urgent letter from the European Students' Union (ESU) on the new Hungarian Higher Education bill. The Commission letter is dated 22 March.

ESU to elect a new Chairperson within three weeks

BUCHAREST - The European Students' Union (ESU) will elect a new Chairperson during its 62nd Board Meeting in Bucharest, Romania, on 22 April. The fight for the helm of ESU will take place between Karina Ufert (Lithuania, currently ESU Vice-Chair) and Magnus Malnes (Norway, currently member of ESU's Academic Affairs committee). Next to this, the Board of ESU will elect two new Vice-Chairs and seven new Executive Committee (EC) members. Full article

Obstacles to student involvement still exist in Azerbaijan
|
BAKU - Some barriers to student involvement in Azerbaijan still exist, possibly due to the geopolitical situation and the political history of the country. This is one of the conclusions from the visit of an ESU delegation to ATGTI, Candidate Member of ESU, which took place between 4 and 11 March. ATGTI is the acronym for the Azerbaijan Student Youth Organizations' Union (also known as ASYOU). Azerbaijan only recently joined the Bologna Process. Full article

Students oppose EU Loan Scheme

BRUSSELS - The European Students' Union (ESU) calls for more access to education mobility by linking the size of Erasmus grants to the socio-economic background of a student. It also makes a strong fist against the EU Loan Guarantee Scheme, part of the 'Erasmus for All' programme, proposed by the European Commission in November 2011. Full article

ESC23 makes recommendations to get young Europe out of crisis

COPENHAGEN - The 23rd European Students Convention discussed employability and employment from 17 to 19 March in Copenhagen. The event, jointly organised by the European Students' Union (ESU) and the Danish National Union of Students (DSF) resulted in the 'Copenhagen Declaration' - 10 recommendations for national governments on how to overcome the difficulties young graduates are faced with when finding a job. BRUSSELS - Student Advancement of Graduates Employability (SAGE) will hold its launch event on 29 May in Brussels. SAGE is a project from the European Students' Union (ESU) focusing on employability of graduates and its improvement through student initiatives. Full article

Call for contributions for EQAF 2012 in Estonia
|
The European Quality Assurance Forum (EQAF), an annual event co-organised by EUA, ENQA, EURASHE and ESU, is the European conference on quality assurance in higher education that brings together all of the key stakeholders in the field - higher education institutions, quality assurance agencies and students. This event is considered by the four co-organising partners as a major contribution to QA in higher education, and a flagship activity in this field. Full article
