ESU mulls over financial future of students

TALLINN - Financing of higher education is the main topic of the ESU seminar, organised in the wake of Board Meeting 60 of the European Students' Union (ESU), taking place from 2 to 4 May in Tallinn. Universities all over Europe contemplate or have already set higher tuition fees, mainly as a result of decreasing government subsidies. ESU will address the question on how this development should be tackled as an increase in tuition fees and study costs is causing problems in terms of accessibility of higher education. Read more

"First EU-China bridge of friendship blocked"
| BEIJING - The European Students' Union (ESU) participated in the opening ceremony of the EU-China Year of Youth, from 21 to 28 February, which formally opened the EU-China Year of Youth and which aims to 'build bridges of friendship' between youth organisations from China and the EU. However, internet restrictions in China on social media and other website pages made and will make it difficult to actually do this. Read more

Romanian students defend students participation

BUCHAREST - A new piece of legislation on Higher Education has recently come into effect in Romania. While students are said to be government partners in this law, they face curtailments of legal guarantees of participation in higher education institutions governance. Romanian students protested against these new developments several times in March. Read more

ESU slams slow progress of Bologna Process
| GODOLLO - The Bologna Follow Up Group, which met on 17-18 March in Godollo in Hungary, failed to re-vamp the Bologna Process which overall aim is to harmonise the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Bert Vandenkendelaere, Chairperson of the European Students' Union (ESU) said: "Although progress in implementing the Bologna reforms continues to be slow, the meeting showed little appetite for proposing concrete initiatives which could lead to a change in this lingering situation." | ESU is disappointed by persisting gender pay gap | BRUSSELS - National Equal Pay Day in Belgium, taking place on 25 March, highlights the fact that women still earn - on average in Europe - 17.5% less than men for the same work. European Students Union's (ESU) Chairperson Bert Vandenkendelaere said: "It is time for government leaders to realise we do not live in the middle ages anymore and address this problem properly."
