Now that Quick Fields 8 is available, you can migrate Quick Fields 6 or 7 sessions into Quick Fields 8 and begin taking advantage of new features. You can migrate an individual session by opening it directly in Quick Fields 8, or batch migrate several sessions using the Migration Utility.
Note: Converting a session from the 6/7 format to the 8 format will create a new file; it will not modify the original session. You can distinguish the two files by referring to their extensions: .qfs (6/7 format) and .qfx (8 format).
To migrate an individual session
1.Open Quick Fields 8.
2.Open a Quick Fields 6/7 session in Quick Fields 8. One way to perform this step is to select Open an existing session from the Start Page.
3.At the bottom of the Open dialog box, next to Files of type, select Quick Fields 6, 7 Session (*.qfs).
4.Browse to and select a .qfs file.
5.Click Open. The conversion process will begin.
6.If the conversion process was successful, Quick Fields 8 will either open your session or prompt you to update it. If the conversion process was not successful (i.e., if an error was encountered), you will be notified.
Note: A log of the conversion process is created during migration. To access the log, browse to the temporary directory on your machine. By default, this directory is C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\Quick Fields in Windows XP and C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\Quick Fields in Windows Vista. If an error is encountered, you must resolve it and run the conversion process again. Warnings, which are also listed in the log file, do not need to be resolved.
To batch migrate several sessions
1.Open the Quick Fields 8 Migration Utility. On a Windows XP machine, click Start, All Programs, Laserfiche, Quick Fields, and Migration Utility.
2.When the utility opens, click Select folder to specify where the converted files should be stored.
3.In the Browse For Folder dialog box, select a location and click OK.
4.Click Select files to specify the Quick Fields 6/7 sessions that should be converted.
5.Select one or more .qfs files.
6.Click Convert to start the conversion process.
7.A dialog box will appear when the conversion process completes successfully, completes with a warning, or encounters an error. In any event, the dialog box will summarize the event and list the path to a log file. If errors were encountered, the log file may help you resolve them.
Note: If an error is encountered, the process in question will not be migrated. Review the warnings to determine how to resolve or rebuild the processes.
8.After successfully migrating a session, you can open it in Quick Fields 8. You may be prompted to update a session after opening it.
Once you have migrated Quick Fields 6 or 7 sessions into Quick Fields 8, you may want to restructure them to take advantage of the new features in Quick Fields 8.
Example: The new Pre-Classification Processing stage can help you create more efficient sessions. For instance, in Quick Fields 6 and 7, if you had multiple document classes and wanted to use Barcode for identification in each, you configured a Barcode process for each document class and each page ran through the barcode process for each document class until it met the identification conditions for one.
In Quick Fields 8, you can configure Barcode in Pre-Classification Processing and configure a Token Identification Process in each class. This way, Barcode will run only once on each page, and the documents will be assigned to classes based on the tokens generated by the Barcode process. The resulting session should run more quickly and accurately.
