November's Featured Project

Our latest featured project is the Baehr Kitchen Remodel. This began as an unusal project for us. Rather than a complete tearout and then install of a new Kitchen, we were faced with a need to work with both new and old elements.

Some of the cabinetry would need a facelift, while new cabinetry would also be installed. The customer chose to go with custo m built cabinetry made by our own Brad Burgin in order to ensure a beautiful match. He started with cherry wood and then gave it a rich, dark finish to add a warm and cozy feel to the room. A gorgeous new window seat with storage was also installed with a matching glazed finish. The cabinets were enhanced by a custom built island in an off-white finish with a chocolate glaze.

The Baehrs chose a gorgeous Golden Shores granite material for the counters and added new appliances to create a beautiful and functional space. The room was finished off with new lighting fixtures, a beautiful tile backsplash and refinished hardwood floors.

The finished product has re-established the Baehrs' Kitchen as the heart of their home and will give them an exquisite space to enjoy for many years. Congratulations on your new Kitchen!

Winterizing Your California Home

WinterizeAll Californian's know we aren't like the rest of the country. We march to the beat of a different drummer here and that holds true for our weather as well. Where else do you get 90 degree temperatures in November?!

Though it may not feel like it right now, winter is on its way and there are several things that you can do to help prepare your home and grounds for the cold temperatures that are just around the corner:

  • Have your heating systems inspected by a qualified service professional at least once a year including lubrication and cleaning, replacing filters, a check of belts and thermostats and having vents cleared of obstructions, as necessary.
  • Make sure window air conditioners do not allow cold air to sneak through or around sides, top and bottom. Local hardware stores can provide covers and other easy, low-cost ways to keep that cold air out.
  • Caulking around windows and other openings can stop the cold air invasion dead in its tracks. A warmer home and lower utility bills can result.
  • When using a portable electric heater, keep flammable materials - bedding, clothing, draperies, rugs and furniture at least three feet away, even if it has safety features such as cut-off switches or heating element guards.
  • If you use an electric blanket to keep warm on a cold night, follow the manufacturer's instructions and make sure you turn it off and unplug it when it's not in use.
  • Install a smoke alarm near bedrooms and on each floor of your home. Test it monthly to ensure it is working properly. Be sure and change the batteries in your smoke detectors once a year.
  • Install a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm near bedrooms and on each floor of your home. Know the symptoms of CO poisoning: headache, fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
  • Have your fireplace chimney and flue inspected each year and cleaned if needed. Open the flue and use a sturdy fireplace screen when you have a fire. Burn only untreated wood; never burn paper or pine branches-pieces can float out the chimney and ignite your roof, a neighbor's roof, or nearby trees.
