From the Executive Director
We are pleased with the responses to the first issue of our Newsletter. Initially, We plan to issue the Newsletter bi-monthly and we shall evaluate this at the end of the first year. Our Table Egg Training School and Workshop took place in Barbados under the auspices of the Barbados Agricultural Society 1-3 July 2009. We had over ninety participants, many of whom came from the egg farming community. The event dealt with Poultry Housing, Feed Management, Poultry Health Monitoring and Egg Quality, Food Safety, Veterinary Practices, Table Egg Standards, Table Egg Production & Processing and Trade issues. Overseas participants came from Belize and Grenada. The general view of the participants was that the event was successful. Our Board Meeting was held in Jamaica on 16 July 2009 under the
chairmanship of the President of the CPA, Mr. Peter De Freitas, CEO of

News from Home - Trinidad & Tobago
The Poultry Association of Trinidad & Tobago (PATT) have expressed concern at the fact that local production has shown its first decline in over 25 years because of the spike in imports in 2008 of frozen leg quarters. This was due to a change in the import regime which removed the Common External Tariff (CET) and the surcharges from Back & Neck, Wings & Other. Imports in 2008 showed a dramatic increase in the imports of Other. PATT has met with the Ministers of Trade and Finance and have made presentations to both Ministers and their teams of advisors illustrating the vital importance of the poultry industry to the economy and nutrition of the nation.

Aussies eat chicken 2.3 times per weekBahrain: The Government of Bahrain is encouraging the expansion of the poultry industry by nearly 25% to ensure greater food security for Bahrainis.Climate Change: A recent OIE Study says that climate change is a reality we cannot ignore and could lead to the emergence of novel animal diseases that may be transmissible to man. OIE calls for new action at the level of research, capacity building and communications. In a survey of OIE members, 58% identified at least one emerging animal disease within their borders linked directly to climate change. Food Legislation: The Obama Administration has passed in the House of Representatives the Food Safety & Enhancement Act (H.R. 2749). This gives the FDA the power to institute recalls, set science-based standards and requires manufacturers to show how these are met, mandates more frequent FDA inspections of once per annum for high risk facilities and once per three years for others and sets a fee of USD500 per inspection.
