Greetings!

Warm Thanksgiving greetings to all of our members and friends! NACPM is excited to share this news from our semi-annual Board of Directors meeting and attendance at MANA Conference, 2010 in Nashville, Tennessee. After you've read the news, we hope you'll take a moment to join or renew your NACPM membership. Your support is crucial to the important work of our organization. (And check out the great contest described at the end of this newsletter that you'll enter by joining before the end of the year.)
NACPM Board of Directors NACPM Board of Directors Semi-Annual Meeting
We spent two and a half very full days evaluating the years' work thus far, and exploring how best to engage our members in developing a stronger professional association.  Watch soon for an update on NACPM Chapters, for news about the first ever symposium for CPMs in the Summer of 2011, and for exciting news from the MAMA Campaign.

Other work included:
  • By-laws changes. After a careful review, four areas of the original By-Laws were identified as needing revision. Watch for proposed changes and rationales coming to you for a vote soon.

  • Newsletters and Annual report. In addition to regular newsletters, our first Annual Report, containing a summary of the year's work and financial report, will be mailed to each NACPM member in January following the end of the fiscal year, December 31.

  • New Board member to be appointed. In September we were informed by newly elected Board member Lynette Elizade-Robinson that demands in her professional and personal life made it impossible for her to continue to meet her Board responsibilities. The Board has accepted her resignation and will now seek a qualified member to replace her. We thank Lynette for all she contributed this past year and wish her well with the important work she is doing on behalf of midwives and families in Louisiana.
Mary Lawlor NACPM Annual Membership Meeting
We had record attendance at this year's Annual Membership Meeting. The agenda included information on NACPM's work this past year, a financial report and time to answer questions. Many members present expressed their appreciation for NACPM's leadership and continued work on the MAMA Campaign. Mary Lawlor, NACPM President and Federal Policy Analyst, reported that we are close to securing a sponsor for a bill that would name CPMs as qualified providers in Medicaid!  She urged everyone to stay up-to-date by visiting the MAMA Campaign web site.

The NACPM Board participated in an important half-day focus group meeting, a first in a two-step process to review and seek input on 8 proposals for changes to general education requirements for Certified Professional Midwives. NACPM congratulates the NARM Board of Directors for an effective and inclusive process, and looks forward to the next steps and a discussion of which changes will be adopted.

Allied Midwifery Organizations (AMO) Meeting
The Boards of Directors of NACPM, NARM, MANA, CfM, ICTC, MEAC, FAM and AME met for a half-day to share reports of their years' work, including goals, accomplishments and challenges. This gathering is always a highpoint, as we all appreciate the contribution each organization makes to the larger picture of increasing access to midwifery care for all women.

Audrey Levine Midwives' Association of Washington State NACPM Workshop: Childbirth Connection's Transforming Maternity Care: Impact on Federal and State Advocacy
NACPM President Mary Lawlor, joined by Board member Suzy Myers and Washington State member Audrey Levine, President of Midwives' Association of Washington State (MAWS), presented a well-received workshop at the conference about how CPMs have participated in and are utilizing the ground-breaking work of Childbirth Connection's Transforming Maternity Care Project to advocate for CPM recognition at both the federal and state levels.

Another Successful MANA Conference!
An important part of attending the MANA Conference each year is the opportunity to share ideas and learn from each other. We enjoyed meeting and chatting with many CPMs, as well as with midwifery leaders, including the Presidents of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), and Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM). We thank the MANA conference organizers for another fantastic conference!
