Addressing Gap in Health Care for People with Mental Disabilities

In the largest-ever gift of its kind, a New York businessman is pledging millions toward improving health care services for people with intellectual disabilities. The new funding will be used to establish an initiative dubbed "Healthy Communities" in Arizona and six other states. Read more in Disability Scoop, New York Times

Obama, Romney Talk Education

While the candidates agreed on some issues - such as supporting charter schools and the important role of a teacher on student success - there was great divergence in some areas of interest to special educators:

  • Vouchers for IDEA/Title I Funding
  • Teachers Matter
  • Testing
  • School choice

The Rights of Parents with Disabilities

NCD Issues Groundbreaking Report "Rocking the Cradle: Ensuring the Rights of Parents with Disabilities and Their Children"

On Thursday, September 27, the National Council on Disability (NCD), an independent federal agency, released "Rocking the Cradle: Ensuring the Rights of Parents with Disabilities and Their Children" -- a groundbreaking policy study, with real life stories of parents with disabilities, to provide a comprehensive overview of factors that support and obstruct Americans with all kinds of disabilities from exercising their fundamental right to begin and maintain families.

Changing School Lunches

Pacer Center

Because of changes to federal nutrition standards this year, school lunches this fall will be healthier. Some of the changes include offering both fruits and vegetables every day of the week and only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties, increased whole grain-rich foods, different portion sizes, and food with reduced saturated fat, trans fats, and sodium. More nutritious meals at school are an important way that schools can help children be healthy. Ideas about healthy living

Study on Medications for Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder

There is a marked lack of data on use of medication treatments for adolescents and young adults with ASD. The evidence on the use of risperidone in this age range is insufficient when considered alone but is consistent with the data in the population of children with ASD.

Individualizing Medicine with Genomics

How will genomics impact you and your family? This new field helps doctors tailor treatments and diagnoses to the differences in each person's DNA that make health care needs unique. Researchers can identify and treat cancers based on a genetic fingerprint, rather than by location in the body. People with complex genetic disorders can get definitive diagnoses and treatment plans. The Individualizing Medicine Conference starts on Monday, Oct. 1. A special webcast featuring physicians and healthcare writers airs at 7 pm on Tuesday on Mayo's Advancing the Science blog http://advancingthescience.mayo.edu/. Ira Flatow of NPR's "Science Friday" will moderate the discussion.

Report: Medicaid boost would save Arizona money

The Arizona Republic

Expanding Medicaid under federal health reform would save state tax dollars, create thousands of jobs and provide government-paid health care to hundreds of thousands of low-income Arizonans, according to a new report from a bipartisan think tank. The Grand Canyon Institute's analysis compares three possible options: keeping the status quo, which includes a freeze on coverage for childless adults; restoring coverage to 100 percent of the federal poverty level; or full expansion under the federal law to 133 percent of the poverty level.

KidsCare II Fills Up, but Eligible Families Should Still Apply

Children's Action Alliance

KidsCare II, Arizona's health insurance for children in working families, has closed enrollment for now.  Children's Action Alliance still encourages families who think they may qualify to apply, since they may instead be eligible for AHCCCS, which is Medicaid in Arizona, and offers the same benefits but for families with lower incomes.

Families who qualify for KidsCare II will now be placed on a waiting list.  As children currently enrolled in KidsCare II lose their eligibility - either because they age out or their family's income changes - new children from the waiting list will be given an opportunity to enroll.  However, AHCCCS, which also administers KidsCare II, will wait until KidsCare II enrollment falls by 1,500 to 3,000 children before enrolling children off the waiting list. Although this may not happen for a few months, AHCCCS will notify families who are on the waiting list through letters and emails when KidsCare II does open again.

Children may be eligible for KidsCare II if their families earn up to 175% of the federal poverty level (FPL) - or about $40,000 a year for a family of four.  To apply for AHCCCS or KidsCare II or get answers to your questions, please call the KidsCare II hot line at 1-800-377-3536.

Helping Raising Special Kids Make a Difference

Zachary modeling his suit

Though this dashing young man manages to dress for school every day like he just walked off the cover of GQ (his own idea), he insists his goals for the future lie in engineering and science. With plenty of confidence and enthusiasm, Zachary is ready to make his mark on the world.

His proud mother, Aimee, has been thrilled to watch him grow during the past two years since they moved to Arizona. "He has made so much progress," she said.

There were many adjustments to make moving into a new school system and coping with medical crises that resulted in several new diagnoses.

"I felt pretty lost, and I was searching for resources," Aimee commented. After a therapist recommended Raising Special Kids, Aimee was matched with a parent mentor who had experienced disability issues like Zachary's.

Aimee attended several workshops on Positive Behavior Support and training about IEPs.  Aimee was also provided assistance with putting an appropriate IEP in place for Zachary. "It was so helpful to have that support. It really helped me with my confidence and being successful in the special education meetings."

Raising Special Kids needs your help to serve more families like Zachary and Aimee's. Please make your donation today through our secure online system. Thank you!
