Funding to Help People with Disabilities Access Long-Term Services and Supports

$25 million in federal funding has become available to help states strengthen and expand their ability to help seniors and people with disabilities access home and community-based long-term services and supports.  Over the next one to three years, funding will support Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) in nearly every state. The ADRC Program will help state agencies administer and better coordinate state and federal long-term service and support programs for older adults, people with disabilities, and veterans with disabilities. 2012 Survey on Impact of Budget Cuts and Pending Sequestration

The Council for Exceptional Children and its division the Council for Administrators of Special Education (CASE), released a joint survey of over 300 local special education directors around the nation. The results indicate the fiscal crisis continues to weaken districts ability to serve students with disabilities and the pending sequestration - across the board cut of 8% - will impact districts ability to educate all students at the local level.

Your Input Welcomed at Department of Health Services

Update from Health Services Director, Will Humble's blog:

It's time for our Bureau of Women's & Children's Health and our Office of Children with Special Health Care Needs to complete their annual application for the Maternal and Child Health Title V Block Grant. When you hear "Title V", people are talking about our maternal and child health prevention programs. These programs work with other state agencies and community partners to promote health and wellness for Arizona's women and children. "Title V" is the shortcut way of talking about maternal and child health because it's Title V of the Social Security Act.

Each year we report what we've done to improve our Performance Measures, which are really national goals, for better women's and children's health.  They're goals like getting more expectant mothers to early prenatal care and finding ways for children to get the health care they need.  The new request will also spell out our plans for work in 2013.  This is where we need your help!  We would like to hear your ideas, comments, or concerns about how we are doing and how we might do a better job. Please send your comments to Dyanne.Herrera@azdhs.gov by June 15.

KidCare II

After being frozen for over two years, KidsCare II health insurance is now able to enroll 22,000 uninsured children. This option was first offered to children already on the KidsCare waiting list. Recently, AHCCCS announced that KidsCare II will likely be opened this summer to qualified children who are not on the KidsCare waiting list. Families can apply for KidsCare today and be ready to have their applications screened when KidsCare II opens up. Families already on the KidsCare waiting list can update their contact information and find help in their community by completing the electronic KidsCare II application.

KidsCare II provides comprehensive health coverage, including well visits to the doctor, dental coverage, behavioral health services, and hospitalizations, for an affordable monthly premium. The income limit for a family to qualify is 175% of the federal poverty level, or about $39,000 for a family of four. KidsCare II is temporary, and will end on December 31, 2013. To apply visit http://www.azahcccs.gov/applicants/KidsCareII.aspx or for more information call at 800-377-3536.

Help Raising Special Kids Make a Difference

Lisa with daughterLisa was contacted by Raising Special Kids just after her daughter was born. Without knowing what was behind her daughter's medical condition, she wasn't sure what sort of help to ask for. But Lisa appreciated the periodic calls she received to discuss new developments, and to talk about other issues or questions.

Now with her daughter in high school, Lisa reflects on the challenges of raising a child with a very rare condition. "We did not even have a diagnosis until she was 10 years old," said Lisa. "There was no specific support group for me to join, but I knew that Raising Special Kids was always there for me if I needed to talk."

It took a lot of research, visits to different doctors in several states, and dogged persistence to discover what was causing her daughter's medical problems. Lisa explained, "When you are going through this struggle, you just feel isolated, and you don't know where to turn. It's so hard because your friends and family want to help, but they don't know what to do, they haven't walked in your shoes. It was good to have other parents I could talk with and share."

"I always feel welcomed--like part of the family," she added.

Raising Special Kids needs your help to serve more families like Lisa's. Please make your donation today through our secure online system. A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated.
