Report finds more childhood disabilities are not physical

UCP SmartBrief
More U.S. families report having a child with a disability, with fewer of those disabilities being physical in nature, according to a study released Tuesday by researchers from Princeton University and the Brookings Institution. Researchers noted in the report that the lack of available data on the numbers of children with disabilities over time makes it "difficult to resolve the controversy over how much of the increase in disability reflects changes in incidence or changes in definition and diagnosis." The State is required to submit an annual report in the years following the submission of the performance plan to inform OSEP and the public on the progress toward meeting those goals.

States are required to make the State Performance Plan (SPP) and the Annual Performance Report (APR) available to the public.  The Arizona 2010 SPP and APR can be found at  http://www.azed.gov/special-education/resources/spp-apr/.

Articles on local efforts to improve employment for disability community

  • Company sees disabilities as catalysts for innovation
    The Washington Times
Arizona-based STEM Force Technology seeks to help communities and companies look at disability in a different way, as "a catalyst for innovation," said founder and CEO Garret Westlake. "The key is not to shy away from what is different, but to engage the difference and make it part of a larger conversation. When you can be open to radical ideas, different perspectives, and people whom you never imagined working with--that is where innovation happens," he said.

KidsCare II
According to Children's Action Alliance, response has been low so far from families to enroll in KidsCare II, a temporary program similar to KidsCare that is being supported with funds from three Arizona hospitals and federal matching funds. AHCCCS is sending letters to inform people on the waiting list, but families must respond quickly. This enrollment is not automatic and families need to complete new applications. Families on the waiting list should update their address and find out if their children are eligible to enroll by calling the KidsCare II hotline at 1-800-377-3536.

Help Raising Special Kids make a difference

girl dressed as a princessDana was puzzled and concerned when her toddler's speech development was not keeping up with her peers. Although friends offered reassurance, Dana was glad she pursued testing after the results yielded a diagnosis of apraxia.

After Katelyn began receiving Early Intervention services, a therapist referred Dana to Raising Special Kids. And when she attended a workshop she found other parents who could relate to her experience. "That was the first time I ever felt like somebody 'got it'."

Dana went on to become a Parent Leader. "I'm getting to meet so many other parents and assist other families. I love being there to share with other families."

Raising Special Kids needs your help to serve more families like Dana's. Please make your donation today through our secure online system. A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated.
