Help with Earned Income Tax Credit -- do you qualify?

Workers could be eligible for a special tax credit ths year and not know it. As a result, they may overlook claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC.

Taxpayers have several choices for free help determining their EITC eligibility and claiming the credit. Many Arizona communities have volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) sites. ABIL will have a VITA site at the Disability Empowerment Center (DEC), 5025 E. Washington St. in Phoenix, every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., February 5 through April 18.To locate a VITA site nearest you, call the IRS at 1-800-906-9887 or Community Information and Referral at www.cir.org/tax.  Help also is available at IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers.  Locations are online at www.irs.gov.

"People move into and out of EITC eligibility based on changes in their earnings, their parental status or their marital status," said Amina Kruck, director of advocacy programs for Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL).  "Many people will qualify for the first time this year due to economic changes in their incomes." Kruck encourages anyone who earned $48,362 or less from wages, self-employment or farming in 2010 to see if they qualify.
