Don't forget that Virginia's sales tax holiday on hurricane and flooding preparedness items purchased ends tomorrow, May 31. You can stock up on supplies for protecting your home and business during hurricane and flooding season and also add items to your family's emergency supply kit. Visit www.tax.virginia.gov and type in "sales tax holidays" to view information about this sales tax holiday and others in Virginia. You will find a complete list of items that are exempt from sales tax during this special time. Learn how to recycle fallen leaves the natural way on your own property with a "Backyard Composting" class on Thursday, May 31, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Walker Nature Education Center, 11450 Glade Drive. Sign up for the Summer Bird Count on Saturday, June 2, 6:45 a.m. to Noon, at Walker Nature Education Center, 11450 Glade Drive. This event is free, but you must sign up by May 31 by calling 703.476.9689 and press 5, or e-mail enviroed@reston.org. This half-day annual Summer Bird Count throughout Reston's natural areas is a great opportunity to meet local bird experts, learn tips on identification, and have fun while helping obtain important information to help our feathered friends. Enjoy an optional lunch, tally results, and swap stories back at Nature House after the count. Reston's Lake Cleanup Day will be held on Saturday, June 2, 10:00 a.m. to Noon, with access points at Lakes Audubon, Thoreau, and Anne. Sign up by May 29 to join fellow boaters and lake enthusiasts for the 6th annual Reston Lake Cleanup. Volunteers will get on their boats or walk the shorelines of each lake to collect. The Reston Chorale and the Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra will present "America Sings with Russian Strings" on Saturday, June 2, 7:30 p.m., at Oakton High School, 2900 Sutton Road, Vienna. This concert will be a delightful musical journey from the Volga to the Shenandoah with two of Northern Virginia's premier arts organizations together for the first time. Advance tickets are $20 adults, $18 seniors, $15 students; children 12 and under are free with an adult. Ticket price at the door will be $25 for all. The "Reston Concerts on the Town" series begins this Saturday, June 2, with a Dance Through the Decades theme at the Reston Town Center Pavilion, 7:30 to 10:00 p.m., rain or shine. This two-day workshop, conducted by an AARP instructor, teaches defensive driving to adults ages 50 and older. This year's "Fair" includes programs ranging from music and entertainment to rides and attractions, and more than 250 exhibitors, vendors, crafters, and community organizations. The Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna will present "Lunch n' Life," a luncheon featuring a performance by the Harmony Heritage Singers, on Monday, June 11, 12:00 Noon, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2589 Chain Bridge Road, Vienna. The Harmony Heritage Singers is a group of talented men who will sing popular tunes, many of them about fun and romance in "the good old days," sung in harmonious barbershop style. Area resident Len Forkas will compete in the 3,000 mile bike race, Race Across America, on June 13. Len will bicycle 3,000 miles from San Diego to Annapolis and will be riding and fundraising for Hopecam, a non-profit organization he founded in 2003 that connects homebound children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses to their friends, teachers, and family. Register for "How to Ride the Bus," a training session for citizens 55 years and older, to be held on Thursday, June 21, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods, 2310 Colts Neck Road. Cost is free. Travelers-in-training will identify a bus stop near Reston Community Center, learn to read bus schedules and route maps, learn how to pay the fare and how to signal the driver to stop, as well as other bus travel skills. The bus will deliver participants to a Metrorail station where they will learn how to determine the fare and purchase Metrorail fare cards, load SmarTrip cards, read the system map, and board the trains to travel by rail. Trainees will enjoy riding a special bus called MATT (Mobile Accessible Travel Training), used to educate seniors through a hands-on learning experience. Plan now to attend an exciting two-day schedule of events at the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum, 11200 Fairfax Station Road, on August 25 and 26 honoring Clara Barton, Founder of the Red Cross, and a 150th Anniversary Civil War Reenactment Commemoration. Outside exhibits and demonstrations are free; museum fee is $5/adult; $1/age 4 to 10; 4 and under are free. Outside activities include exhibits, Union and Confederate Reenactors, and living history demonstrations. Inside the Museum you can see Clara Barton displays, Civil War telegraph and museum exhibitions, and local authors. This exciting two-day event will commemorate the medical evacuation of the Union wounded brought to this train station after the nearby battles of 2nd Manassas and Ox Hill. 3,000 Union wounded were brought by various means to this train station. They were hastily treated as they lay and awaited rail transport back to hospitals in Alexandria and Washington. Civilians were sent out on the trains to aid the wounded. One of those civilians, Clara Barton, would later be called the "Angel of the Battlefield" for her efforts.
