Please plan to participate in one or both of the Public Hearings below as we prepare for the 2009 General Assembly session that convenes in Richmond on January 14.  Speak to us about issues of interest or concern to you.  All are welcome, and pre-registration is not required.  Written testimony is helpful but not required. 
 
Delegate Ken Plum and Senator Janet Howell will host a Public Hearing on Tuesday, January 6, 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Reston Community Center at Lake Anne, 1609-A Washington Plaza, Reston.

The Fairfax County Delegation to the General Assembly will hold its annual pre-session Public Hearing on Saturday, January 10, 9:00 a.m. to close, at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.

RecycleBank (888.727.2978; www.recyclebank.com) encourages consumers to go green by offering them discounts and coupons for goods at hundreds of stores, including CVS and Home Depot.  Based in New York City, the company contracts with communities across the country and gives households credit for the weight of recyclables set out for curbside pickup.  Residents not only reduce their carbon footprints; they can earn up to $540 in rewards annually.

Visit www.VAmegaprojects.com to learn more about Virginia Megaprojects in transportation.  Stay abreast of the many new major projects underway and how to navigate through them during construction.

Volunteers are needed to help Northern Virginia adults improve their English skills.  The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia helps adults learn to read, write, speak, and understand English through one-to-one tutoring programs.  The next English literacy tutor training workshop will be held on three consecutive Saturdays, January 24, January 31, and February 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the James Lee Community Center, 2855 Annandale Road, Falls Church.  For more information email volunteers@lcnv.org or call 703.237.0866.
 
The Fairfax Choral Society will hold auditions for its Youth Chorus on Sunday, January 4, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Annandale United Methodist Church and for its Adult Chorus on Monday, January 5, 6:20 p.m. at Fairfax Presbyterian Church.  Singers auditioning for Youth Chorus should be prepared to sing a standard song, such as "Happy Birthday," and a song of their choosing, without piano accompaniment.  Visit www.fairfaxchoralsociety.org/youthauditions for details.  Singers auditioning for the Ault Chorus should be prepared to sing an excerpt from Mendelssohn's Hear My Prayer, which can be found along with other pertinent information at www.fairfaxchoralsociety.org/auditions.
 
The Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Mail Preference Service lets you opt out of receiving unsolicited commercial mail from many national companies for five years.  When you regtister with this service (for a $1 fee), your name will be put on a "delete" file and made avialable to direct-mail marketers.  However, your registration will not stop mailings from organizations that do not use the DMA's Mail Preference Service.  To register, go to www.dmachoice.org.
 
The Hunter Mill District Coat Closet is still in need of your donated new and gently used coats.  The Coat Closet is open for dropping off or picking out a new coat on Tuesdays 10:00 a.m. to noon, Thursdays 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Countywide Special Election on February 3, 2009
 
There will be a Special Election for Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Sueprvisors on Tuesday, February 3, 2009.  All qualified voters in Fairfax County are eligible to vote in this election.  The polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
 
The final day of voter registration is Wednesday, January 21, to be able to vote in the February 3 Special Election.  If you are already registered at your current address, you do not have to register again.  In-person voter registration forms must be received in the Office of Election by 6:00 p.m. on January 21, 2009.  Mail-in registration applications must be postmarked on or before January 21, 2009. 
 
Absentee Voting Schedule:
Monday through Friday
January 9 through January 30:  8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Office is closed January 19 and 20.)
Saturday, January 31, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
 
Absentee Voting Deadlines:
Applications to vote absentee by mail must be received in the Fairfax County Office of Elections no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27.  Voted ballots must be received in the Office of Elections by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, February 3, 2009, in order to be counted.  If you will be away from Fairfax County on Election Day or are unable to go to the polls because of illness or disability, you may vote by absentee ballot by mail or in-person.

Attend the Hunter Mill District Town Hall meeting on the FY 2010 budget on Wednesday, January 7, 7:00 p.m. at James Madison High School Auditorium, 2500 James Madison Drive, Vienna.
 
Hunter Mill District Supervisor Catherine Hudgins will host a Town Hall meeting on the foreclosure crisis for homeowners and renters who live in Fairfax County on Thursday, January 8, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Reston Community Center, 2310 Colts Neck Road, Reston.  The event is free.  Registration is required due to limited seating.  Call 703.478.0283 to register.  Local agencies that provide assistance with food, clothing, and housing will be on hand. 
 
The McLean Historical Society will host a local history program, "The Battle of Dranesville and John Singleton Mosby, nearby area connections with the Gray Ghost and his Rangers," on Thursday, January 8, 7:30 p.m. at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Avenue, McLean.  The talk will be given by Donald C. Hakenson, author and long-time resident of Fairfax County.  Mr. Hakenson will also have books available for sale and autographs.
 
Help shape Virginia's transportation future by attending the Revised FY2009-2014 Six-Year Improvement Program Working Draft Public Hearing on Tuesday, January 13, 7:00 p.m., Fairfax County Board Room, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.  Lists of specific projects and changes from the current program will be available at the public hearing, on VDOT's web site at www.VirginiaDOT.org, and at VDOT District and Residency Offices prior to the hearing.
 
The Reston Community Orchestra under the direction of Dingwall Fleary will perform a special concert, "Honoring Dr. King," on Saturday, January 17, 6:00 p.m. at Reston Community Center at Hunters Woods Village Center, 2310 Colts Neck Road.  MetroSingers, directed by Myron F. Join your friends on January 20 at ArtSpace Herndon at 750 Center Street, Herndon, to watch the Presidential Swearing-In Ceremony, the Inaugural Address, and the Inaugural Parade on the ArtSpace Gallery's 126" big screen.  Refreshments will be served, and you are also invited to bring a pot luck dish to share.  This celebration is being organized as a day of community service dedicated to the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic.  Help the Clinic by bringing needed items to the Inaugural event.  Here is a partial wish list of "most needed" items:
