Dear Colleagues,

It has been reported to me the attached merger notes have been disseminated to the Main Campus Deans and perhaps to the JHCOE faculty and staff in preparation for a meeting of JHCOE faculty and staff with Dr. Jacobs this afternoon. Although the note by Dean Brady states the merger notes were prepared by Dean Brady and I, they were prepared by Dean Brady and sent to his Executive Council and me for feedback. I asked him to remove a reference to Allied Health and stated I would further revise the notes IF the BOT actually acted on the recommendation for the merger. Dean Brady and I did not sit down together to prepare the notes. If the BOT acts on a recommendation to merge our two colleges, I will draft some notes about how we will proceed, issues to be addressed and opportunities that will present themselves. Then I expect he and I will mesh our notes so we both use the same set of talking points with persons in the community, the press etc. In the meantime, I want you to have the merger notes prepared by Dean Brady.


Communication under these circumstances is a challenge and I anticipate communication will continue to be a challenge if the BOT acts on the merger of our colleges. I ask that if you hear statements while engaged with others at the university that you are not certain about, to please inform me so I can help all of us have the most accurate information possible. I will make every effort to keep you apprised of events as they unfold and more importantly to engage you in the next steps if the merger is approved.

Enclosed are notes that Bev and I prepared in anticipation of press interviews and internal discussions, with the goal of explaining the proposed merger using positive words and by offering a consistent explanation to all stakeholders.

I have a meeting scheduled with the JHCOE faculty and staff this Friday at 2:30 in Stranahan 1140 when I expect to offer a brief explanation of the merger and to open the floor for questions and comments. I will use these notes, in part, as my script.

Bev and I and several faculty have been approached by the Independent Collegian for interviews but, by agreement, we have declined all interviews until after the Board of Trustees has approved the merger.

When we do agree to interview, these notes will guide our conversation.

Any additions, corrections, or suggestions are welcome.
