Inside Higher Ed presents... 30-Minute Chat to Tenure
UT-AAUP President, Harvey Wolff, Quoted
Lloyd A. Jacobs announced last week that in his role as president of the University of Toledo, he plans to interview every faculty member who comes up for tenure before making a recommendation to the board on whether to approve the bid.
While many faculty members are angry about the idea that an academic career can be evaluated in a short conversation, Jacobs said he finds it odd that people expect a president to urge trustees to grant tenure to someone without the president having talked to the person and formed an independent judgment. "I think that the concept of university presidents being relegated to a rubber stamp role is one of the downsides of our current higher education," he said...(read more)
Faculty objects to changing UT's tenure The Toledo Blade (11/22/09)
University of Toledo President Lloyd Jacobs wants
to interview professors up for tenure to learn more about them, but
faculty members say that would be an abuse of power and is not needed.
Recommending
a professor for tenure to the UT board of trustees is a million-dollar

those decisions...(read more) |

group recently issued a detailed report, "Protecting An Independent
Faculty Voice: Academic Freedom After Garcetti v. Ceballos."...
Want A Job In Akron? Hand Over Your DNA It's not unusual for employers to conduct criminal background checks during the hiring process. But the University of Akron has taken this to a surprising new level. The Ohio school now reserves the right to require any prospective faculty, staff, or contractor to submit a DNA sample, which genetic-testing experts say makes it the first employer in the nation to take such an extreme and potentially intrusive step...
UA faculty willing to strike The Akron chapter of the American Association of University Professors warned its members Monday that a work stoppage could occur if negotiations with the administration don't move along. AAUP President Walter Hixson advised fellow faculty that the University of Akron administration is trying to undo some of the advances made in the union's first contract four years ago...

Top scholars should lead research universities Research universities should be led by brilliant scholars and not merely talented managers, says Warwick University fellow Amanda Goodall. It is not sufficient for leaders to have management skills alone, Goodall states in a new book. In Socrates in the Boardroom: why research universities should be led by top scholars*, Goodall challenges the orthodoxy of "managerialism" which began in the Thatcher era and continued during the Blair decade...
