Presidents Remarks:
Pam Rambo, Ed.D
NSA VA President 2012-13
There are many positive reasons that I am a member of NSA Virginia for life. NSA Virginia launched my business, taught me amazing speaking skills and how to monetize my expertise. I value all of that. However, what I value more is the lifelong friendships I am making. No other professional organization that I have joined has ever touched my life in the way NSA Virginia does. Joining NSA gave me dozens of new best friends.
The NSA Virginia difference is that NSA Virginia is an organization that you do not outgrow. It is not a speaker incubator that you visit until you become great. It is a business incubator that you stay near because it not only launches businesses but helps them evolve. No successful business survives without change. Speakers who develop a style and a business plan and products that sell are not done. They are just getting started. But not everyone realizes that. Sometimes you may meet speakers whose style and business plan are what worked yesterday. They become what one witty member calls "Stepford Speakers".
NSA Virginia is dedicated to offering networking, education and training to promote you and your business. Thank you for the value that you add to our organization. We welcome the people in your life who you invite to visit our meetings and look forward to watching your business grow and evolve in the marketplace. |

NSA Virginia Notables
HIGHLIGHTING OUR MEMBERS
By Pam Rambo, NSA VA President
Classy Casual: How to Wow Everyone When You Are Dressed Down is Sandy's new book. This book is for people who:
- Work in an office that has a Business Casual dress code
- Want to know what to wear for dress-down personal occasions
- Would like to wow everyone outside your formal office environment
Sandy has been an important leader in NSA Virginia as one of our former presidents. She also plays an important role in national NSA appearing in programs and publications. Contact Sandy through her website, www.theimagearchitect.com.
Business Casual is hard to define. Fortunately, NSA Va. has its own image architect. Former NSA President Sandy Dumont, The Image Architect, frequently gets asked by companies to do workshops to define it. So, a couple of years ago she wrote a book for men entitled "Business Casual is Dead, Long Live Classy Casual." After that book was released, women wrote to Sandy to ask when she would write a book for them. |

Turning Your Roots into New Branches
by Tom Davidson, The Leadership Institute
NSA Virginia September Workshop Sponsors:
Turning Your Roots into New Branches
by Tom Davidson, The Leadership Institute
NSA Member Tom Davidson has gone back to his roots to branch out in his business.
Decades before he became a speaker, Tom grew up outside, backpacking, caving, rock climbing and teaching outdoor survival. When he chose a career, he thought that meant he should work outside, so he became a forester, cruising timber, marking thinnings, supervising loggers, planting trees, advising landowners and fighting forest fires. But over 20 years, his leadership career took him away from natural resources and toward human resources, where he became vice president of HR and organization development for a large tissue company.
After entering private practice in 1999, Tom became a leadership consultant and executive coach. While he was able to survive in this overcrowded market for more than 10 years, he finally listened to his NSA colleagues and began a transformation from "one of many" to "a market of one," returning to his natural-resource roots in a new way. In doing so, he made over his business from Davidson Leadership (which remains his generic brand) to Leadership Nature (his niche brand) with the tag line, Because Great Managers Don't Grow on Trees.
In addition, he is now writing a column on leadership in one of the major forestry news journals, hosting a leadership forum for foresters on LinkedIn, authoring a book on leadership for the Society of American Foresters (SAF), and presenting on five different platforms at SAF's Annual Convention. By becoming a market of one, Tom's business quickly doubled and referrals are flowing like never before, thanks largely from the advice and encouragement of NSA colleagues.
If you'd like to learn more from Tom's experience to help turn your roots into branches, contact him at Tom@LeadershipNature.com.

Tools of the Trade
By Dave Miles, NSA VA Publicity
This month I wanted to look at a tool that was brought to my attention during a posting in the NSA Facebook group. They were discussing a new tool called BigMarker.com. Wanting to find out more about it, I decided to look into it and here's what I found.
What it is...
BigMarker.com (www.BigMarker.com) is an all-in-one solution that appears to combine the best portions of software and/or internet sites that we already use into one package. It is a web-based/cloud-based package so there is no software to download or update. It is a combination social touch-point (such as Yammer, Ning, & GroupSpaces), Video Conferencing (WebEx, GoToMeeting, Skype), and File Sharing / Project Management site (DropBox, Huddle, Basecamp, SharePoint).
They offer both free and premium packages, depending on your needs. Their range of services and packages are listed on the site.
How it works... (test drive)
I decided to test it out with my Ph.D. cohorts for a comprehensive exam study group. We were able to make both a public 'community' that anyone online with BigMarker can attend, and private sub-communities that are only open to invitees. We are able to park documents and file-share among the group and in our first couple of test runs, the video conferencing portion worked very well. There is a feature called "Speaker Highlight" that brings whoever is speaking up to the top so everyone can see.
The ability to 'share' a document in real-time such as with WebEx is very good and requires a quick upload to the group-meeting site. There is no need to 'share the desktop' to look at a document as with WebEx. The only real issue I had was that when we tried to actually share our desktop, the program froze, but was easily reloaded. I was able to review PowerPoint files and Word files easily without having to share the desktop, so I simply avoid that.
What's in it for me... (how do I make money with this thing?)
For marketing your intellectual property as a professional speaker and trainer, BigMarker.com has a feature to 'sell tickets' to a webinar that you can host. They do all the collecting for a small percentage and deposit your money into your PayPal account very easily. For those who have (or are looking to have) a premium paid membership group associated with your website, BigMarker allows for 'dues' to be collected to be a member of a specific group if you set up that feature. You can also record the sessions to use for CD's, MP3's later as product.
To find out more about BigMarker, go to www.BigMarker.com/tour and look around. There are a lot of ideas on the site. You can also email Joe Yeoman, Director of Partnerships (joe.yeoman@bigmarker.com), he indicated to me that they are in a big push towards membership.
Check it out and find out if this 'Tool of the Trade' is something that will be beneficial to your business!

Local Conference Opportunity
By Dave Miles, NSA VA Publicity
Toastmasters District 66, which encompasses the same geographic area as NSA-Virginia, will be holding its 2012 Fall Conference on November 2nd - 4th in Richmond, VA. The District Governor, Pete Moyer wanted me to extend his personal invitation to all NSA-Virginia members to attend. The conference will be held at the Sheraton Richmond Park South Hotel on Midlothian Turnpike in Richmond.
The keynote speaker for the event will be the 2005 World Champion of Public Speaking, Lance Miller. Other World Champions of Public Speaking include Darren LaCroix and Ed Tate (who will be speaking to NSA-Virginia at our November workshop). A personal favorite is a friend and colleague of mine, Dr. Diane Norbutus who will be conducting a leadership breakout session on Saturday.
If you would like more information about the conference or to sign up, go to www.District66.org.

HELP!!! HELP!!! I'M LOST AND WANT TO GO HOME!!!
By Kittygayle McMoon, NSA VA Librarian
I can hear them now....all those little NSA CDs sitting in a corner or under a car seat, in briefcases, purses, even the CD player........forgotten and unremembered........
For Example:
"Secrets to Creating a Killer Keynote and Earning a Ton of Money Now!" Presented by David Greenberg (2009);
"No Fairy Dust Here...True Tales on How To Make the 'Big Bucks'!" Presented by Kathleen Cain (2010)
There are seventy-six (76) of these NSA CDs out there somewhere feeling abandoned, unloved, unwanted..... and no one seems to know where they are.......
DO YOU? Even if you don't think you have any of these homesick CDs, please, please, please search in all your nooks and crannies to see if there is a wayward CD there!!! They have "hidden" in odd places in my house and car so I know their "brothers and sisters" must be hiding in your house and car and you don't even know they are there!!! (Oh, Dear!)
It's Fall Cleaning Time and we have our first meeting on the first day of Autumn!! If you have EVER borrowed even one CD, PLEASE search, find and bring our wayward NSA CDs to the meeting!
If you are not going to be at the meeting and you find any, please call your Librarian, Kittygayle McMoon, at 804-334-1228 and pick up will be arranged! (Anonymously if desired!)
Help us put our wonderful library back together again! Thanks!

| New Member Spotlight on Judith O'Brien
By Joan Bowling, NSA VA Membership Chair
Judith came to NSA/Virginia compliments of an introduction via Suzie Galvez in August, 2012. Thrilled and educated by that first NSA/Virginia program, Judith quickly became a member. As Judith is speaking more as a part of her job, the platform skills shared by the NSA certified speaking professionals that guest at our monthly NSA/Virginia programs will be a valuable resource to her throughout the course of this year.
Now, back to the harmony part. . . . Judith comes to Richmond, VA by way of Austin, Texas where she ran a music school. The bass is her instrument of choice. Texas does things in a big ways and Judith found that one of the rewards of teaching Willie Nelson's daughter was the generous gift of a piano for her school. An arts administration scholarship brought her to Washington, DC. After a stop in Lubbock, TX and then Fairfax, VA to manage their symphonies, she settled in Richmond with her wonderful teenage daughter.
When she's not fulfilling community commitments because of her philosophy of giving, you might catch Judith at a live arts concert for either classical, jazz or theater. Or you could find her in the kitchen preparing a favorite Persian dish. She's an "awesome" cook!
Please join me in welcoming out newest NSA/Virginia member. You may reach her at: judithobrien@financialguide.com or in Richmond 804-6762-5413
Our newest NSA/Virginia member brings harmony to every stop along the way of her entrepreneurial career path. Judith O'Brien, is a Financial Advisor with Capital Financial Partners, a general agency of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) here in Glen Allen, Virginia. The integrity of this rock steady 160 year old company provides a sound basis for Judith to deliver modern, relevant guidance to clients in this ever evolving financial world. |
