The Power of Networking

By Mark Deutsch, BNI/Central Virginia Executive Director

I see it in training business owners, entrepreneurs, and sales people every day - they know that referral and word-of-mouth marketing are the best ways to do business, so they attend dozens of business and social networking events every month. They accumulate many opportunities that lie in stacks of 3 ˝ x 2 inch 'fields of dreams,' (aka business cards) but they fail to convert them to reality. This is due largely, if not entirely, to the flawed thought that you can and should stay in touch with every single person you meet versus building a deep relationship with a select few. In the business world, where we are so often told that "sales is a numbers game," master networkers know that the opposite is actually the truth: depth trumps width. The challenge is implementing a system that allows you to most effectively treat the members of your networks as they deserve to be treated.

It's a lot like the process of finding a spouse. One strategy is to simply go to a bar and just ask every woman there if she'd like to marry you. Statistics tell us that at some point, after you endure enough slaps to your face, someone will say yes (Sounds a lot like cold calling, doesn't it?). Another strategy is to build deep, productive relationships with a few people who genuinely know, like, trust, and respect you - and they will work to find a great mate for you (that's how I found mine, a blind date I was set up on that worked out!).

This is the power of networking - developing deep, personal, and professional relationships with other like-minded people who want to help you to succeed. As you find other people who share the same belief, your network will be more powerful than you can imagine.

Spring Cleaning: Time to Get Organized!

By Laura Stack, NSA National President

It's springtime! For most, that means throwing open the windows and doing some serious spring cleaning. It's also a great opportunity to catch up on much-needed spring organizing...attacking the organizational backlog that may have piled up over the last few months.

Here are some tips on doing away with the two most pervasive and frustrating forms of clutter: paper clutter and electronic clutter.

Tackling paper clutter

A BusinessWeek article called "The Office of the Future" gives a promising glimpse into the future of office productivity, including the paperless office. The article was originally published in 1975. Anyone out there working in a paperless office yet? Quite the contrary. Most of us are saddled with more paper than ever. So much for the paperless office!

Tools of the Trade

Overwhelmed by technobabble? We've got you covered! Tech's Appeal with Jennifer Jolly helps make technology less frustrating and more fulfilling, so you can get more out of it and get on with your life!

  1. Pocketfinder- I can't imagine life on the road without this new personal GPS. It's a tiny, pocket-sized location device that can track people, pets, or even lost luggage any time - from just about anywhere in the world. You charge it up, turn it on, and then put the cookie-sized GPS in your child's backpack, your teenager's car, your own luggage, an elderly parent's pocket, or even on your dog's collar. Then you use a free app on your computer, smartphone, or tablet to see where they are. What's really cool about PocketFinder is that you can set allowable zones - say, for your kids to walk to and from the beach on vacation. If they leave that zone, you'll get an alert. Have a teen who's just gotten a driver's license? Put the PocketFinder in the car and set an alert to see if they're speeding or driving dangerously. I just used PocketFinder to track down my luggage a good two hours before the airlines did, when it was misrouted to Orange County instead of Orlando.
  2. A-Solar Power Dock - If you need to keep a charge on the go, this little A-Solar Power Dock is small enough to fit in your pocket and powerful enough to charge your smartphone with a little help from the sun. It sports a durable built-in battery, a small solar panel, and a strong, rubber-finished casing. Leave it sitting in the sun (by a window) for a day, and it can juice up your iPhone in about four hours or your iPad in roughly two hours. It also has a USB port, so it works with Android devices as well.
  3. Sony eReader Wifi- You hear a lot about the Kindle and Nook, but a lesser-known e-reader, the Sony eReader Wifi, has become another constant travel companion since I first reviewed it in January. It's the lightest 6" e-reader on the market today, weighing less than a paperback, and holds up to 1,200 books. It's also the first e-reader to offer wifi public library access and downloads right from the device. I also love the glare-free touchscreen. But the best part? You can read for more than a month on a single battery charge.
