Alternate Travel Routes to Greenbrier Country Club, Chesapeake, VA When meeting in Chesapeake, there is often a back-up at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) in the mornings and afternoon. This is particularly true on Friday afternoons. The backup can be 7 miles or longer and add 45 - 60 minutes to your trip west. There are several alternate routes to consider depending on the traffic conditions. Heading TO Chesapeake from Richmond/Wmb
Option 1- HRBT is best route traveling to Chesapeake on a Friday morning.
Option 2- Take Interstate 664 if there is a backup on the HRBT (watch the VDOT electronic signs).
Take I-664 in Hampton and cross the James River on the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel (MMBT). About 9 miles past the bridge tunnel, the highway bends left and merges with Route 58. Shortly after that I-664 ends and I-64 starts. Stay in the far right lane to be able to merge onto I-64.
Proceed on I-64. At 7 miles, you'll cross the High-Rise Bridge. Several miles past that is the exit for Greenbrier Parkway. Head south on Greenbrier and turn left on Volvo Parkway to reach the Country Club. Option 3 - James River Bridge and Route 17 to I-664 If both the HRBT and MMBT are delayed (watch the VDOT electronic signs), you can use the James River Bridge (JRB).
Exit I-64 at Mercury Boulevard (Exit 263A). Stay in the left exit lane to head to the JRB. After 4 miles of urban traffic, you'll cross the bridge. Stay on Route 17 and after about 10 miles you'll reach I-664. Head south on I-664 and follow the above directions. Heading to Richmond in the afternoon
It is almost always a bad choice to attempt to return via the HRBT. Head towards the MMBT by taking I-64 towards Suffolk. Be prepared for delays crossing the High-Rise Bridge. I-64 will end where it merges with I-664. Stay in the left lane to merge onto I-664. Be prepared for additional delays along I-664. After crossing the MMBT, I-664 will end at I-64 in Hampton. Stay in the left two lanes to merge onto I-64 West to head towards Richmond. Be prepared for additional delays near the Jefferson Boulevard exit and slow traffic from there to Williamsburg. |

From Our Chapter President. . .
Cathy Lewis
Dear NSA Virginia,
I don't know about you, but I am still reeling (in the most positive way!) from Sam Horn's terrific presentation 9-24-10 at the Willow Oaks Country Club. It would have been magnificent if Sam had given us any of the presentations she's presented at national conventions, but Sam did even better than that for us; she brought us fresh ideas and new approaches to distinguish ourselves and describe more effectively to others what we do.
Thanks so much to Pam Rambo for staffing Sam's book table, Lisette Johnson for inviting our guests to consider membership, Coleen Kenny and Charlyne Meinhard for hosting Sam in Richmond, and Tom Davidson and Ron Chapman for a magnificent launch to the ProTrack year. The Willow Oaks venue seems to have been a hit, and I'm glad to let you know that all of our remaining Richmond programs will be held at this facility.
On October 22, we're in Chesapeake at the Greenbrier Country Club, and what a program we have for you! David Newman is well worth the trip from wherever you live. He is a full-time speaker who spent a year booking other speakers. David will share 21 specific strategies to get you booked and keep you booked. In October only, we'll add a special afternoon bonus session called "Live Ammo Marketing Lab for Speakers," a hands-on program to help you stand out from the competition and win bigger and better clients.
Our brilliant NSA convention team has just returned from a triumphant presence on behalf of all of us at the Virginia Society of Association Executives meeting, October 7, in Richmond. This event is just one of the many member benefits NSA brings you to help you build your business.
On behalf of your excellent board of directors, I wish you the most prosperous month yet, and we'll see you in Chesapeake on October 22.
Till we speak again,
Cathy

NSA-VA Chapter Promotes You As A Speaker
Richmond, VA--Virginia Society of Association Executives (VSAE) Conference:
Meeting Planners, "meet" the NSA-VA Chapter Members! "Introducing" them at the Oct. 7conference of Virginia Society of Association Executives were the select team of Smokie Sizemore, Tom Davidson, and Dick Olenych.
Setting up the chapter booth (above) as a homebase, the team represented all chapter members for speaking opportunities in their areas of expertise. The new NSA-VA Membership Book, displaying each speaker's photo and profile, was another tool the chapter provided for the "introductions."
Smokie reports results from the day's event:
"We collected 13 names to add to the [chapter] database, 2 names to come to meetings, and we gave out the beautiful membership book to all that came even close to the booth. Tom and Dick went around to exhibitors and enrolled them in taking a book also. Being with Tom and Dick was a blast!"

We asked Liz Garrett, Certified Wellness Coach and this year's VA Chapter Publicity Director, to put on her "Meeting Planner Hat" and give us some insight about how speakers get hired by a meeting planner. In addition to her coaching business, Liz leads a successful meeting planning business. You can reach Liz at Liz@ExecutiveWellnessCoaching.com
---------------------------------------------------------------
What Do Meeting Planners Seek? Liz Garrett, CWC Speakers, you are in a position to help meeting planners succeed. Meeting planners rarely make a decision based on their own tastes and preferences. They are balancing what they believe will make the event a success with the opinions, tastes and directives of a Board or key member.
Sometimes these forces are at odds.
The more you understand the tricky balancing act a meeting planner is performing, the more easily you can gain a reputation for helping meeting planners succeed. This, in turn, helps you succeed because one of the first things a meeting planner does when considering a speaker is to check references with other
meeting planners. Stand in the meeting planner's pumps for a moment, and think about how you might help her succeed. ASAE (American Society of Association Executives) suggests the following practices for meeting planners seeking speakers:
*Get recommendations from other associations and meeting planners;
*Hold out for something unique or highly customized;
*Seek diversification in gender, race, age and opinion;
*Allow a long lead time--book far in advance;
*Look for a sponsor to cover speaker's fee and expenses.
To increase odds of receiving a good recommendation or being invited back, speakers should:
*Remember, meeting planners are answering to someone on the Board. A recommendation from a board member or the right member goes a long way.
*Allow flexibility and creativity for the meeting planner.
*Exhibit over-the-top professionalism in every interaction. (Anything less will eliminate you from the pool.)
*Aim to hit the highest marks on the evaluation form;
*Always use a microphone (don't make it the audience's job to hear you);
*Know how to work your technology;
*State needs (a/v, table arrangement, mic needs) well in advance. Don't arrive and start moving chairs.
In a July 2010 Meetings & Conventions Magazine article, "How Planners Find Speakers -- and the Prices They Pay," Loren G. Edelstein reports that word of mouth is the prevailing method of finding speakers. Note also, motivational messages are among the most appropriate keynote categories, followed by industry-related topics, future trends, and humor.
