Start a Mastermind

We at NSA-Virginia recommend that you attend our meetings to identify a group of your NSA-Virginia peers that will complement your own skill set to grow your business. You can then start meeting on a regular basis to drill deep into your needs and opportunities.

However, as NSA Virginia is somewhat geographically spread across our magnificent state, we also recommend an online discussion group to amplify your meeting learning.

It's easy to start a  free and open Yahoo discussion group and join your regional peers today.

You're working hard aren't you?  Doing all the right things to succeed:  reading books, listening to audio programs, networking, attending workshops, using daily action sheets, committing, dedicating and focusing, over and over and over, right?  Well, a mastermind group just may be the catalyst you need to ignite these efforts and launch your career into the stratosphere.

The concept of the Mastermind Group was introduced by Napoleon Hill in the early 1900's and has been popular with successful people ever since. In "Think And Grow Rich," he described the Mastermind principle as, "The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony...No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind."  That "third mind" is the mastermind.

Mastermind groups provide many benefits to their participants, including mutual support, differing perspectives, resources and accountability.  To form a mastermind group, look for members who
have a shared objective, are able to give and receive feedback, have similar drive and commitment, offer diverse skill sets, and are problem solvers.  Effective mastermind groups tend to be limited to three to six people so that the meeting can be short and deep.

Mastermind groups benefit from structure.  Members should agree on a purpose for the group which will ultimately drive its structure.  The frequency of meetings (weekly or monthly is recommended), as well as meeting time (beginning and ending) and place (conference calls are also used) must be agreed upon and committed to.  There are variations in how mastermind groups use agenda-giving each member allotted time at each meeting, dedicating meetings to a member on a rotating basis, or developing an agenda for each meeting-and this should be agreed upon from the beginning.  A leader, whose duty it is to keep the meeting on track, should be appointed, and this duty can rotate as the group determines.  Some
mastermind groups identify a member who takes notes during the meeting to share with participants.  The agreed upon structure should be written and distributed to members from the beginning to assure a solid foundation for the group that does not stifle the group.

Mastermind groups are popular among NSA's success-oriented members.  NSA/San Diego Chapter hosts a monthly mastermind meeting in a local restaurant for its members and affiliates.  Typically, 5-7 people attend, and not usually the same people each month. Participants bring something to share/give to the group, a goal to ask for support on, and an honest report of how they are doing/did on last month's goal.  Participants have benefited from more effective marketing materials; greater bonding, network and personal support; creating speaker business defining statements, slogans, business names; and more frequent connection with other members between the meetings.

One of the active mastermind groups in NSA/Virginia includes Cathy Lewis, Tom Davidson, Dorothy Erlanger and Ron Chapman.  The group meets monthly to support each other and to provide accountability and feedback on one-sheets, presentations, speeches, brochures, etc.  Of his experience, Tom said, "I've been part of two Mastermind groups, both involving professional speakers, and next to NSA, there has been nothing more valuable for accelerating my thinking, actions, and results. The amount of
progress
I've made in two years probably equals the previous six. I look forward to our meetings as much as any chapter meeting, because I know that just by contributing to the subject matter, I'll learn deeply and solve one or more of my own business challenges. Also, you can't beat the accountability factor of both being prepared for each meeting and doing what I said I would do after the last one!"

Look around. Your NSA/Virginia colleagues are perfect candidates for your very own mastermind group.  Make some calls.
