From September to June There is Always Room for NSA on Your Calendar

Exciting Start to New Chapter Year
Your Board and Committee Chairs made smooth handoffs from their predecessors beginning in June, held their initial planning retreat in July, and executed a flawless first chapter meeting in early August, with NSA President Phil Van Hooser.  I'd say that's a pretty darn good start to a new NSA program year, and I hope you're half as excited about it as I am!

Monthly Programs
You'll see a description of our September 18 program in this issue, featuring media expert TJ Walker.  TJ is a good example of the kind of quality programs we will be bringing you this year, continuing an NSA-Virginia tradition and adding some new twists in the process.  Visit www.nsavirginia.org to review the program lineup and mark your calendars to attend every event you possibly can!

Trade Shows
In addition, your Board will be representing you at two trade shows specifically for Virginia-based meeting professionals, one in Norfolk and the other in Richmond.  They will be "talking you up" and distributing our latest directory of Members and Affiliates so you are easier for them to find and knock their socks off.

New Initiatives
In addition to exceptional programming, your Board has determined to focus on four special initiatives this year:
  • Finding ways to help cross-promote one another's businesses;
  • Considering new meeting locations to ease travel and traffic burdens;
  • Including "showcasing" opportunities during the year to promote multi-level learning;
  • Helping Affiliates become National Members and National Members to become Certified Speaking Professionals.

National Programs
While the local programming is fantastic, there is nothing like the national conferences (November and February) and the national convention (July) to light your fire.  Once you go to your first national event, you'll be hooked for life!  Check out Coleen Kenny's tips (below) and these testimonials from the 2009 National Convention in Phoenix:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR6ZtatfKV8.
Mark your calendars now and take your speaking business farther...faster!

Hope to see you at our Sept. 18 meeting in Chesapeake!
Warm regards,
Tom

My NSA Ideas Are Like Oreos... ...I can't have just one!!!

By Coleen Kenny

"So much fun and great energy!!"

"I had been to the smaller fall and winter conferences in Scottsdale and Orlando, which made a huge difference when attending my first national conference this year. I met more people in the smaller venues and felt like an old pro by the time I attended national!"

"Pack a nice suit/dress for the national conference closing awards ceremony.  Leave room in your bags for all the wonderful books and resources you will carry home."

"Pack thank you notes so you can write them as you go rather than trying to get them all done when you return to the real world."

"Consider a Divide and Conquer strategy. There are so many wonderful concurrent sessions so grab a pal and share your notes. Consider donating copies of your notes to the chapter
so we can put them with the conference CDs in NSA-Va lending library."

"Have your idea/platform down to one sentence when others ask 'What do you speak on?' '"

"Smile and the whole conference will smile with you! Many people approached me to say, 'You are always smiling!' This led to wonderful conversations and new friendships."

"Sit with people you don't know!"

"Rest when you need to."

"Check with NSA veterans before signing up for anything with vendors or coaches. (per Phil Van Hooser, NSA President 2009-2010)"

"Like I said...Oreos...:-)"

Thanks, Coleen, for your enthusiastic endorsement of the NSA National Conferences and Convention as rich resources for all members.

Rah, Rah, Christine!

Lillian Lambert recently learned from her publisher, John Wiley & Sons, that her book, The Road to Someplace Better: From the Segregated South to Harvard Business School and Beyond ,has been selected for an audiobook version.
Wiley & Sons will publish Lillian's book in January
2010, and Audible will produce a verbatim unabridged reading of the
book, read by a professional actor/narrator.
Great News, Lillan! WOW!

Sandy Dumont was featured in the July 2009 Money Magazine Special Report 9-page article, "Go From Fired or Retired To Hired."  Sandy was the Image Consultant member of the 4-person makeover team.  Sandy remade the physical appearance of three unemployed professionals, whose "Before" and "After" photos dramatically displayed Sandy's expertise. Sandy's company is THE Image Architect.
Great Profile & PR, Sandy!
