The Search for a Local Morning Edition Host Continues
New England Public Radio plans several new hires in the coming months

A national search is underway to find a new Morning Edition host, to replace the late Bob Paquette. Resumes are currently being evaluated by the search committee. We are hopeful to have a new host in place early in 2012.

Searches are also underway for a Senior News Editor and a Webmaster/Graphic Designer to round out the station staff and help the organization grow. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the next several months.

Tom Reney Hosts The Joy of Sax Film Series at Amherst Cinema
Join us next Monday evening for a double feature!
JALM Film

Film lovers and jazz enthusiasts alike have been flocking to the Joy of Sax Film Series, presented in partnership by New England Public Radio, The UMass Fine Arts Center and the Amherst Cinema.  The series explores the stories of several saxophone greats in conjunction with the UMass Fine Arts Center's year-long music series, "The Joy of Sax." Each evening begins with live jazz music music, and features an intro and q&a session by  Jazz a la Mode host, Tom Reney.

Coming up Monday evening, don't miss the chance to see two great jazz films on the big screen, and learn a little something new about jazz greats from Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, Horace Silver, Marian McPartland, and Nat Hentoff among many others as we screen "A Great Day in Harlem" and the short film, "Jammin' the Blues."

"Jammin' the Blues" is an Academy Award-winning short that features Lester Young and Sweets Edison, Jo Jones and Illinois Jacquet. It was produced by Norman Granz, who would go on to found Jazz at the Philharmonic and Verve Records, and featured the cinematography of Life Magazine photographer Gjon Mili.

"A Great Day in Harlem" celebrates the famous photo of 57 jazz greats taken on 126th Street in Harlem. Jean Bach produced this 1994 Academy Award-nominated documentary which brought together many of the surviving musicians who had gathered one morning in 1958 for a photograph taken by Art Kane for an Esquire Magazine special on jazz.

The evening begins at 7 PM with live music before the film. Tickets are available online at the Amherst Cinema's website, and at the door the night of.

Audie Cornish to Co-Host All Things Considered
The former WFCR intern and UMass graduate will fill in for Michel Norris through November 2012

Audie Cornish
Audie Cornish

Last week, Michele Norris announced that she would temporarily step away from the ATC host chair through the 2012 election cycle because her husband has taken a senior position with President Obama's re-election effort.

She is not leaving NPR's airwaves, however. While she will not be involved in coverage of the 2012 election, Ms. Norris will continue to report and produce projects for the organization.

Ms. Norris' announcement left NPR with a critical role - and some very special shoes - to fill. Today, NPR announced that Weekend Edition Sunday host Audie Cornish has agreed to a one-year assignment as co-host of All Things Considered.  Audie will move from Weekend Edition Sunday to ATC in early January.

"While it was a tough decision to move Audie (albeit temporarily) from a program she has quickly made her own, her skills and experience make her the ideal person to step in," said Margaret Low Smith, NPR's Acting Senior Vice President for News in a statement to NPR member stations. "She is a warm and familiar voice to NPR audiences and an outstanding journalist and storyteller. Audie will be a wonderful complement to Robert and Melissa. And, in an Election year, her experience covering Capitol Hill and the 2008 presidential election will be a huge plus."

NPR will conduct an internal search for a one-year host for Weekend Edition Sunday immediately.
