Yoga on the road

I love to travel. Taking time to explore the world is truly a joy for me, and it is a great time to practice being at home wherever I am. Whether it is going to a place I have never been, or visiting family and friends in familiar places, I love that "being on vacation" feeling.

One of the tricky things about traveling can be keeping your yoga practice going. On occasion, I have found a nice yoga studio in the places I have traveled, and dropped into a class or two. Having a class to go to can be truly grounding when you don't have your familiar world around you. But finding a yoga class that you love is not always possible when you are in certain places, so it is nice to have some possibilities to practice on your own.

If you are comfortable guiding your own practice, that's great, but if not, there are an array of tools to help you. I love to use Seattle yogi Melina Meza's book, The Art of Sequencing to get ideas of what to practice, or simply to follow the sequencing and poses. A practice CD can be especially nice, too, pop it into your cd player or laptop, and be guided through an audio practice. We carry a couple of yoga practice cds by one of our regular guest teachers, Rebekkah LaDyne. We also have a variety of other books and music that can inspire your practice.

All our retail (aside from mats) are 20% off from July 3rd-19th. Take some yoga on your vacation with you this summer and be at home anywhere in the world!

Allison Muir
Allison has been practicing at Source Yoga since 2007, when she began coming to the Mom and Baby yoga classes with her son, Dylan. You have likely seen her in many other of our classes since then. She and her husband, Dan have two boys, Dylan (3) and Isaac (19 months), and Allison shares the joy of yoga with them in our Wee One's Yoga class every Wednesday.

Source Yoga: How did you get into yoga?

Allison Muir:  A good friend of mine convinced me to take a yoga class with her at our gym.  It was a basic hatha class and I loved every minute of it except savasana. It was funny because my body is naturally very flexible so many of the poses came easily for me, but relaxing at the end was extremely difficult.  I can still remember my first teacher grabbing my toes to keep them from wiggling during corpse pose.  That was over ten years ago.  From that class I moved on to try vinyasa classes, which drew me even more into yoga. But I think I truly fell in love with it, when I joined my first studio and started taking classes from an Anusara inspired teacher who spent a lot of time discussing alignment.  I realized at that time that though I was able to "get into" poses, I wasn't moving from the correct places and I could feel a difference in my entire being as my body learned proper alignment.  All of a sudden yoga became something much more meaningful to me.

SY: Why do you practice yoga?

AM: I feel like I was born to do yoga.  My body feels amazing after I practice and my mind feels at ease.  I love looking around the studio during a class and being completely blown away by the beauty of a classmate's pose.  I am constantly inspired by the grace of the human form.  I have a busy mind and two young boys who keep me on my toes all day every day, so my mat is the place I come to for quiet, peace, calm, breath and at the same time movement, challenge, and physical reward. I practice because I feel more connected to everything when I do, because it is like prayer for me, because it makes me truly happy.

SY: What does your practice look like?

AM:  Right now I try to make it to two classes a week and hope to add more when I can.  This includes workshops, retreats, anything and everything. I am inspired right now to go as deep as I can into my practice and that means challenging myself with the parts of yoga that are most difficult for me, like meditation and working on strength and stability in my asana practice.  Luckily, the wonderful teachers at Source are giving me lots of tools to play with.  It is hard for me to find time at home to practice, but I am using time at home to read about it.  I recently checked-out a few books from the library on Hindu mythology.  I can't pronounce most of the characters' names, but the stories are entertaining and truly beautiful.

SY: How does your yoga practice affect your life?

AM: I find more and more that what is true for me on the mat is true for me in the world so I am trying to take the lessons I learn during practice and apply them as I flow through my daily life. This is harder said than done sometimes, but I keep working at it.  I also think my yoga practice helps me feel more connected to everything and everyone, which helps me have greater compassion for other beings and for myself.

Lokhah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu ~ May all beings in the world be happy.

Namaste,
Melissa and Erin
