Citta vritti nirodaha
Yoga is the cesation of the fluctuations of the mind. This is one of the very first recorded statements of what yoga is, attributed roughly 2500 years ago to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. We may think of yoga as a series of postures and breathing, stretching and strengthening exercises, but what we are truly practicing each and every time we come to the mat or the meditation cushion, is stilling the ever active, ever talkative mind.
We can practice quieting the mind in an active yoga posture, or in a more restoring pose where we are focused on relaxing the body and the mind. We can practice this while sitting in meditation, observing our breath, our body, and our thoughts, and learn to take that practice into our lives and be able to be relaxed and present in everything we do.
One way to quickly, easily, and beautifully settle into that quiet mind, is through the practice of singing in community. As we open our throats to allow the breath to create the vibration of sound in mantras, chants, or songs, the heart naturally begins to open as well, and the mind begins to let go of its insessant chatter. We are in the moment.
In the next month or two, there are several opportunities for you to experience the power of singing. Our montly Kirtan, led by local friend and yogi Jeannine Maxwell, will be this Friday at Source Yoga, 7-8pm. Experience the sweetness of song and chant in a small group - by donation ($5 suggested).
At the end of this month, go to Seattle to experience some chanting masters. March 24th at the Moore Theater, Krishna Das joined by Deva Premal, www.krishnadas.com for more details. And check out our studio favorite, Snatam Kaur March 31st at the Seattle Unity Church. www.snatamkaur.com, or contact East West Bookstore in Seattle for tickets.
April 10th, we welcome back guest teacher Rebekkah LaDyne for an afternoon workshop featuring LIVE MUSIC with Seattle favorites Steve and Anne-Emilie Gold. That evening, Source Yoga will co-sponser a concert/Satsang with Three Trees Yoga in Federal Way and Yoga Soliel in Puyallup. They will perform and lead group singing at Three Trees Yoga. Sign up at Source Yoga to come and sing with us!
It is important to remember that to experience the joy of singing in community, you don't have to be a trained singer, or even a good singer! Come join us for one of these wonderful events and access the peace of residing in your voice and in your heart.

March Events
Yoga for Fertility With Guest Teacher Lynn Jensen Saturday, March 13 ยท 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Cost: $60 (10% off for members)
Yoga for Fertility is designed for women or couples who are trying to conceive, either naturally or through assisted reproductive technology. In a recent Harvard-based study, women participating in a yoga and relaxation program increased their chances of pregnancy by almost 3 times. We will use specific yoga postures for each phase of your monthly cycle, to stimulate and tone the reproductive system. We can also help regulate the body's hormone levels using yoga postures, breathing and relaxation practices which support the endocrine and nervous systems. Yoga is a well-recognized stress-reducer, and chronic stress has been shown to adversely affect fertility. The class environment is small, personal and supportive. No previous yoga experience is necessary. If you are currently taking a general yoga class, it is highly recommended that you attend a session of Yoga for Fertility to learn how to adapt poses during your cycle.
 Attention New Mommas!!
Source Yoga will be having a Mother's Tea after the Mom and Baby Class Wednesday March 17th! Stay after class and meet your community of Yoga Mommas!

Source Yoga Teacher Najeea Leslie
Najeea is both a massage therapist practicing Chi Nei Tsang (Taoist abdominal massage) and a yoga instructor. She teaches Monday night Relax/Restore and Yoga Nidra the third Friday of each month.
Source Yoga: H ow did you get into yoga? NJ: I have always had a deep sense of longing to fully express my love and happiness. Even as a child I had a fascination with the intangible aspects of life. In my twenties I was searching deeply and asking "Why am I here in this life, what's my purpose?" It came to me that I am here to do healing work but I must actively be healing myself in order to serve others. I experienced yoga as a healing practice right from the beginning, so it was a perfect fit for me. In 1991 I began studying with Sue and Mike Maharry at The Yoga Room in Tacoma. As a result of having a formal practice I found real direction in my life. I am deeply grateful to them for their support and dedication to the practice of yoga.
SY: Why do you practice yoga? NJ: My desire to fulfill my purpose in this life is deep and it requires a lot of clarity and inner strength. Sustained practice has given me the discipline essential to developing those qualities. I love how my practice affects the most important aspect of my life, my relationships. It helps me to be more conscious and loving day by day. When I am present to the truth of my essential nature I have the freedom to act accordingly. My experiences in life and my relationships are very different when I come from love versus fear and anxiety.
SY: Why do you teach yoga? NJ: Teaching yoga is like showing someone how to fish. As a result of the practice we start living more authentically and having a sense freedom and peace. It cultivates awareness, compassion and clarity, which increase our ability to be more loving towards ourselves, and others. The outcome is greater healing and love in the world. How wonderful is that?
SY: How does your yoga practice affect your life. NJ: Here's an example of a big transformational moment that happened in the first years of my practice. During the seconds after the impact from a fender bender, when time seems to slow down, I heard a voice say," You can freak out and get really stressed but that won't change a thing so you might as well stay calm and make it easier on yourself. It's your choice." I got it and did stay calm and it was much less stressful. From then on I understood how I could actually impact my experience with my state of mind. I feel more emotionally and spiritually mature with each passing year. My desire is to be awake through all of my life, even in the most challenging moments. If I'm not happy with my life it's my responsibility. I want to look back, whenever my time comes, and go, "wow, that was great!" My practice is making these things possible.
