Meet Our Newest Teacher! BRYAN MICHEL Bryan teaches Friday mornings 6-7:15 AM
Practicing yoga since 2004, Bryan quickly realized that yoga helped improve his performance in other favorite sports. Additionally, he noticed the mental clarity and calm yoga provided to everyday life. In 2008 Bryan trained through Corepower Yoga in San Diego, CA to receive a Yoga Alliance certification.
Bryan teaches a Power style of yoga, with elements of Anusara and Ashtanga yoga, focusing on strong, flowing vinyasa movements and centered mental focus. Bryan provides an athletic and meditative class for all experience levels. Whether for sports cross training, serious yoga practitioners, or those in need of rejuvenation, Bryan can provide a venue for your experience.

Yamas and Niyamas
To those of you who have been practicing for years or are brand new to yoga you may find you are searching for ways to deepen your practice on and off the mat. Whichever place you come from you are familiar with asana, pranayama, and meditation. But you may not know much about the first two steps of the yogic path: the yamas and niyamas. These are the ethical guidelines and personal practices that contain principles of living that are universal.
Yoga instructor, Donna Farhi beautifully sums them up by saying, The yamas and niyamas are emphatic descriptions of what we are when we are connected to our Source. Rather than a list of dos and don'ts, they tell us that our fundamental nature is compassionate, generous, honest, and peaceful.
As many of you may know, the yamas and niyamas were the focus of the Harmony Hill yoga retreat last month. It was a truly inspiring and enriching retreat filled with insights, depth, self-realizations, awareness, laughter, and an overall good time. Since the retreat we have wanted to find a way to bring back a piece of what we experienced that weekend and bring it into the community, and into the daily classes. We have decided one way to share is to bring a yama or niyama to your attention through our newsletters. You can think of it as the yama or niyama of the month. I encourage you to take it on, read about it, live it out, and see what you discover. For most of you, your first experience of yoga was through yoga postures ,one of the steps on the yogic path. And oftentimes there is a sense that something is missing which manifests in attending more classes, harder postures, more technique, more teachers. There becomes a restlessness both in our yoga practice and in our lives. The tools that will support us and provide us with energy, balance, and awareness, are through the yamas and niyamas.
Niyama of the month: SANTOSHA (CONTENTMENT) This month I encourage you to study and delve into the niyama, Santosha (contentment) Practicing contentment with yourself, your life as it is, even in the midst of distress. Cultivating gratitude and joyfulness for the gift of life and simply content for what is, without interfering. You can practice this on the mat by acknowledging your tendency to strive to do the perfect pose and then accepting the one you are in. See if you can relax into where you are in your posture and realize that it is perfect as is. And then notice how this follows you into your life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Melissa on Maternity Leave As many of you may or may not know, I am expecting our second baby in July and this pregnancy has been more challenging for me physically and emotionally then with my first. I have had to dig deeply and learn to arrive in each moment with that acceptance and gratitude of how my life is. It is a daily, sometimes moment by moment conscious choice I have to make to stay present to being content no matter what my external circumstances may be. I am learning to listen and respect my body's needs even more and trust that this is what needs to be for both me and my growing baby. I am learning a new depth of acceptance and surrender and feel a greater awareness of who I am. I have stopped teaching many of my classes and at this point I am only teaching Prenatal for a little longer. I miss seeing all of you and will look forward to coming back to teaching when the time is right. I have excellent teachers teaching my classes while I am on maternity leave, so please come to class and see what you can discover with their guidance. I look forward to bringing a new being into the community and I am truly grateful for the support, love, and encouragement from the Source community. |

Meet Your Community! Sherry Williams is a public defender in Tacoma and has been teaching at Source since the studio opened.

She teaches Thursday evenings Basic Flow 5:30-6:45pm, Intermediate Flow 7-8:15pm and Sunday Community Yoga 5:30-6:45pm
Source Yoga: How did you get into yoga?
SW: I was a philosophy major in college and always interested in eastern thought. My interest in yoga grew during the 70's while I lived in Berkeley, and continued while I lived in New York getting my MA in Dance/Movement Therapy. I remember teaching sun salutations to my Outward Bound co-students, and to participants on outdoor adventure trips I led, and to patients in the psychiatric wards where I interned and worked. I also studied one summer at Naropa Institute in Boulder, and the combination of rock-climbing ("yoga on the rocks") and Buddhist thought taught me a great deal.
SY: Why do you practice yoga?
SW: I practice yoga because it keeps me connected to my body and brings balance to my current work as a public defender. I see so many people every day who perhaps made unfortunate choices, who may have had limited opportunities for one reason or another, who are in deep pain, who are trying to drink or drug their way through life, who know violence all too well...and I can't "fix" it. I need to be present for what is, however, and respond to it as best I can, and my yoga practice helps me do that.
SY: Why do you teach?
SW: It's heartwarming to see someone gain strength, flexibility, balance, and learn life lessons right there on the yoga mat. To take those lessons and qualities off the mat and use them in the rest of one's life where it really matters is, to me, the point of practice. It's an honor to act as a midwife, so to speak...to support someone's exploration and growth...to witness the blossoming. It takes courage to step out of your comfort zone, and a yoga class can be a great learning lab. You try something, you wobble, you cut yourself some slack and you try it again....you modify or intensify....you find your own way, your own path, with all it's ups and downs...one breath at a time.
SY: How does your yoga practice affect your life?
SW: "The house of yoga has many rooms," says one of my teachers. There's a room for everyone, whatever approach you resonate to best. For me, a hot, sweaty practice with some good assists from an inspiring teacher takes me "higher" in all kinds of ways, and meditation helps me tame my mental gerbil-wheel. Both practices offer challenge and sanctuary...the yin/yang of life...they are gifts that keep on giving...and available through all of life's ages and stages. Perhaps they are just two doors into the same BIG room...Resolve to Evolve and these practices can point the way.
