Oh What a Lovely War (OWALW) chronicles the First World War, told through the songs, documents, and music of the time - a musical like no other, reminding us of a history that cannot be forgotten.
First performed by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, London, in 1963, OWALW received the acclaim of London audiences and critics, winning the Grand Prix of the Theatre des Nations festival in Paris that year. Now considered a classic of the modern theatre, the play presents tragic events of world importance without nostalgia or bitterness, yet with pathos, humor, and lovingly authentic detail.
